A 24-hour non-profit hawker centre will be opened in the Workers’ Party Opposition Ward at the People’s Association (PA) Ci Yuan Community Club in August 2015, announced the National Environment Agency (NEA) today (Jun 8). The hawker centre, located inside the PA Community Club along Hougang Avenue 9, will, according to PA, feature “food items at lower prices to act as a benchmark for other stalls”.

The new 5 storey-hawker centre will have a 640 person capacity with up to 40 cooked food stalls, with an open air concept at its top floor. In a press release by the NEA:

“Residents can look forward to enjoying affordable food at the new centre, which will also be equipped with tray-return facilities, natural ventilation and family-friendly features such as child-friendly toilet facilities and family-friendly seating.”

The hawker centre will be managed by Fei Siong Food Management will be non-profit, and the food stall rental will range from S$1,500 to S$1,800, which is about the average monthly market rate paid by existing stall owners in Hougang. Hougang residents will be assured that the food prices will be “moderated” from 80 cents coffee to $2.80 fish ball noodles.

Will you vote the PAP for a hawker centre?

Why didn't the Workers' Party start any of such initiatives to give residents cheaper good food? They are really good-for-nothing! I would rather vote for an MP who could work with all the relevant government agencies to launch such pro-residents ideas. Vote out the jiak liao bee WP!

Are you crazy? This is exactly why we should vote for the Opposition. Fernvale residents nearly get a columbarium for voting the pappies.

Because the WP doesn't have access to taxpayer's money to dish out freely.

This is a hawker centre in the WP area. Who is going to be responsible for quarterly and annual cleaning? The WP run town council, of course.

Looks like another PAP dirty tactics in the making.

Not-for-profit is pure bs. Are the managers in that firm volunteers or are they paid salaries? How much is the CEO earning? $5k a month or $200k a month? Without financial details provided, treat the non-profit claim as bs.

If the WP had wanted to start a cheap food centre, they would face insurmountable hurdles from the authorities! Maybe even brought to court for operating without a licence!

And not to mention too... inspections and raids by the 'local' authorities!
