Malaysia repeats stand of no claim over Sabah

by ruben sario

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia is reiterating its stand that it does not recognise any claim over Sabah.

Wisma Putra said Sabah had been recognised by the United Nations and international community as being part of Malaysia since Sept 16, 1963.

This was the message Malaysia conveyed to Philippines charge d’affaires Merdardo G Macaraig who was summoned to the Foreign Ministry on May 19.

The Ministry said in a statement that Macaraig was summond in the wake of a statement by Philippine president Benigno Aquino III that he had no intention to drop his country’s claim over Sabah.

Aquino said this in an interview with Philippines journalist Raissa Robbles on May 15.

The question was posed to Aquino amid growing speculation that Manila would drop the Sabah claim in exchange for Malaysia’s support for a Bangsamoro government in southern Philippines.

Malaysia summons Philippine official over claim on Sabah
The Malaysian government has summoned Philippine Charge d'Affaires Medardo G Macaraig over remarks made by President Benigno S Aquino on Philippines' claim on Sabah.

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said on Sunday it had summoned the Philippine Charge d'Affaires Medardo G Macaraig on May 19 over the remarks made by President Benigno S Aquino.

The Philippine President had remarked on Philippines' claim on Sabah in an interview by Ms Raissa Robles for the South China Morning Post on May 15.

In the interview, President Aquino had stated that he would not drop Philippine's claim to Sabah, contrary to what critics of his centerpiece legislation on Muslim autonomy - the Bangsamoro Basic Law - are saying.

Malaysia's MFA on Sunday reiterated in a statement "its position that Malaysia does not recognise and will not entertain any claims by any party on Sabah".

It added that Sabah is recognised by the United Nations and international community as part of Malaysia since Sep 16, 1963.

North Borneo dispute
Territory in the 1878 agreement - From the Pandassan River on the north west coast to the Sibuco River in the south.[1]

The first concession treaty was signed by Brunei Sultan, Abdul Momin, appointing Baron de Overbeck as the Maharaja Sabah, Rajah Gaya and Sandakan, signed on 29 December 1877.[2]
(Right) Sultan Jamalalulazam of Sulu signed the second concession treaty also appointing Baron de Overbeck as Dato Bendahara and Raja Sandakan on 22 January 1878, approximately three weeks after signature of the first treaty.[3]
The North Borneo dispute refers to the territorial dispute between the Federation of Malaysia and the Republic of the Philippines over much of the eastern part of the state of Sabah, a territory known as North Borneo prior to the formation of the Malaysian federation. The Philippines, presenting itself as the successor state of the Sultanate of Sulu, retains a "dormant claim" on Sabah on the basis that the territory was only leased to the British North Borneo Company in 1878, with the sovereignty of the Sultanate (and subsequently the Republic) over the territory never having been relinquished.[4] However, Malaysia considers this dispute as a "non-issue" as it interprets the 1878 agreement as that of cession[5] and that it deems that the residents of Sabah had exercised their right to self-determination when they joined to form the Malaysian federation in 1963.[6]
