Just 300 more jobs filled in Q1: Cause for concern?

The number of people employed in Singapore grew by just 300 in the first quarter of the year.
This preliminary figure from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) came as a surprise to many observers as, up to last year, the labour market had been humming along with an average of 31,670 more jobs filled each quarter for the past five years.
"Disconcerting", "startling" and "somewhat bewildering" are how some economists described the three-digit figure which greeted them two Saturdays ago.
Released a day after May Day, the number was the worst quarterly showing since the global financial crisis in 2009, when total employment in Singapore shrank for two consecutive quarters.

If you guys think that all the National Wayang Talkcock TV Shows about jobs, local Sinkies vs foreigners are for real, you better think harder about what's really going on.

The reality of the job market is as follows:
1) Majority of the companies (be it MNCs or SMEs) will try to exploit and take full advantage of the labor laws, subsidies and grants given by our Sillypore gahbrament.
2) Their priority is only to "hire Foreigners first".
3) Job opportunities will only then be given to local Sinkies after majority of the posts has been filled up with foreigners claiming that they need to meet the so called "quota".
4) When local Sinkies send resume to the companies, the first thing their HR or Recruitment Manager does is either to put them into trash bin, sit on them or put them in the last queue.
5) These days, most of the hiring tasks has been outsourced to all those Recruitment Firms, they are also one of the main culprit to help companies to hire Foreigners first.
6) Sillypore gahbrament care less about jobs going to local Sinkies.
7) The gahbrament number 1 concern is only to keep collecting the lucrative "Foreigner Worker Levy" from companies by continue to relaxing the rules and laws for hiring foreigners.

This data clearly debunks the lie that opposition IBs have been spreading: that foreigners hire their own kind and retrench sinkies. If that was true, we should still be adding thousands of jobs each quarter.

This data also reflects the level of our PAP government pandering to the xenophobia exhibited by many insecure sinkies. At this rate, we may need to vote in a new government that is more open to foreigners than the PAP. Many of our businesses are crying out for more foreign labour, not less. I hope our PAP government would listen to the real cries on the ground, instead of the nonsense spewed by netizens on the social media.

When the day comes that your boss tells you that you can now go back home to sleep because he already got a foreigner to replace you.
Will you still be singing the same old tune that your ah gong and ah long has done a great job for Sillypore?

Clearest sign the economy is dead in the water. Gahment will try to mask this by ramping up construction works for the new airport.

All by CPF contribution.
Many are working odd job no CPF contribution lost job.

Simple. Just fix all FT with same LEVY $1k/head/month.
Regardless blue color/maid/expat.....so employer will not play around with S-pass/EP.

I am glad to see more Sinkies out of jobs. Only then will they appreciate what the PAP has been doing all these past years, instead of kpkbing about their policies and the FTs infiltration.

With the new manpower ministar in office, they will add more jobs in the following quarters, as there will be new and important jobs in the premium toothpick industry.

Gov really no brain.
If lower skill/pay can pay $1k levy why higher pay like EP(high pay) cannot afford to pay same levy.
Why screw lower pay worker.
All should pay same amount regardless type of working pass.
