SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 36-year-old man who is believed to have impersonated as a public servant.
He is also suspected of committing theft at HDB estates in Sims Drive, Geylang East and Aljunied Crescent.
Police said in a statement on Monday that they have been receiving several reports since October of a man acting as a plainclothes policeman who stole from victims he did "checks" on.
In most cases, the suspect approached female victims at isolated locations and identified himself as a police officer. He flashed a card reflecting his picture and a police logo.
He would then check on the unsuspecting victims' belongings and steal their valuables.
Cash, jewellery and handphones amounting to more than $2,500 were stolen, said police.
The suspect will be charged in court on Wednesday ofr personating as a public servant and theft. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to two years for impersonation and three years for theft. He may also be fined.
The police reminds the public to be vigilant and wary of people who may impersonate as police officers. If in doubt, request for the police officer's warrant card to verify his identity before complying with the instructions of the officer.
A genuine warrant card will have identification features such as the police crest, the photo of the officer, his name and NRIC number.
If they are still unsure of the person's credibility as a police officer, they should call 999 for assistance.
