Some Hong Kong citizens are considering emigrating to Taiwan due to political instability in the special administrative region, especially since last September's Occupy Central protest for democracy, people familiar with Hong Kong are saying.
Chang Tieh-chih, chief editor of City Magazine in Hong Kong, recently moved back to Taipei after living in Hong Kong for two and a half years.
In an article titled A Farewell Note to Hong Kong that was published on April 21, Chang said the tensions between Hong Kong and China are escalating, and many aspects of Hong Kong have rapidly deteriorated over the past two years.
From politics to economics and culture, people are trying to find a way out for Hong Kong, he said.
Lee Kwong-kin, an associate professor of history at National Chi Nan University, who emigrated from Hong Kong to Taiwan in 1993, said his friends in Hong Kong often approach him for information about emigrating to Taiwan.
Lee told CNA that the current political and social atmosphere in Hong Kong is very depressed due to the confrontation between proponents and opponents of the Occupy Central movement.
He said many of his friends who did not think about leaving Hong Kong during the pre-1997 emigration wave are now considering moving out of the special administration region.
Besides Taiwan, some people are also planning to move to Shanghai and Beijing, according to Lee.
