[h=1]CALVIN CHENG: THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH 'BUYING' A DEGREE FROM A MILL[/h]

Post date:

Amazing how many nincompoops on 'alternative' sites are insisting that IDA has no integrity for hiring a foreigner with a fake degree.

The person in question has an MBA from Southern Pacific University, which is an unaccredited university, a degree-mill. This is different from fraudulently claiming to for example have an MBA from Harvard when you don't have one.

This foreigner put her degree on her CV and IDA rightly discounted it, since it's a non-accredited degree, and hired her on her Bachelors, which is from a reputable university.
That's it. There is no fraud, no lying, no local deprived of a job because of a fake degree.

Now if only these people will stop spreading their own lies. I must say that the comment sections of the Facebook pages of these alternative news sites are a cesspool of stupidity.

Calvin Cheng, please shut up or else the PAP is going to lose more votes!

Once the PAP is ousted from power you may have to suck up to new masters to obtain perks for your shitty modelling business.

Calvin Cheng

The MBA from Southern Pacific University is not a question of accredited or non-accredited degree. It is outright fake.

In the US, using a fake degree from a degree mill is a class C felony, a crime of fraud that could warrant five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

This is the part IDA did not make clear - whether IDA knew at that point in time the MBA was non-accredited? And why SPU was non-accredited? That SPU was a degree mill?

Calvin Cheng shouldn't be putting words into IDA's mouth. IDA, in an attempt to bypass the issues of -

(1) the MBA being fake
(2) the integrity of a person who holds herself out as an MBA graduate when she is not
(3) the moral stand of IDA (if they knew about the degree mill) in hiring a person who holds herself out as an MBA graduate when she is not -

would only go as far as admitting that they knew she had an MBA from SPU.

I agree with Calvin. If the source of the MBA is clearly stated and there is no attempt to deceive, I don't see an issue.

A SINGAPOREAN WAS ONCE JAILED 1 YEAR FOR HAVING FAKE DEGREES

Post date:
21 Apr 2015 - 11:02am

With the revelation that there is a worker in IDA with a fake degree, it is concerning that IDA seems to be disinterested in doing anything about it.

Since then, netizens have also continued to dig up further examples of people who are apparently working here with fake qualifications.

For those, like Former NMP Calvin Cheng, who believe that buying a degree is not actually that bad, you are wrong.

There was a case in Jan 2013 where a Singaporean man desperate for a job was jailed for 1 year for buying several fake degrees and using them to secure jobs.

34 year old Yeo Cheng San was jailed 1 year for buying fake degrees. He had bought a Bachelor's degree, a Masters degree and a Post-Graduate Diploma for over $8,000 from a university in Florida, USA. He was then able to secure a job earning up to $12,800 a month despite only having an O level qualification.

In another case, 25 foreign talents were also jailed for having fake degrees and using them to secure work passes after MOM discovered the fakes.

In this case, 25 Foreign Talents from Myanmar, India and the Philippines pleaded guilty to using fake degrees to obtain work passes in Singapore and were sentenced to 4 to 12 weeks jail each.

The MOM issued 20 S Passes and 5 EPs to the 25 FTs with fake degrees between November 2012 and June 2013.

The MOM later discovered that the degrees were fake after doing some additional checks with the foreign institutions that the degrees were supposedly from.

Given that there have clearly been prosecutions in the past, it is wrong to suggest that buying a degree is not that bad.
Is there a double standard being held when some people are jailed for having fake degrees while others are defended by government agencies?

When will IDA take action?

It's a crying shame. Calvin with his chee bye mouth does not know the difference between an 'unaccredited degree' and a 'fake degree'. He also conflates an 'unaccredited university' with a 'degree mill'.

A degree from an unaccredited uni is perfectly legal, though it may not be recognized by an employer or a govt authority. A degree bought from a degree mill is a fake degree, and listing it in a job resume is a crime in many countries.

Being deliberately obtuse and obfuscating issues is a favourite pastime of PAP shills. They will do whatever it takes to prop up their little tinpot fiefdom.
