[h=1]LUI TUCK YEW: S'PORE'S MRT DELAYS ARE BETTER THAN NEW YORK[/h]

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said that he will ask the the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and SMRT to "get to the bottom of the recent disruptions" but said that Singapore's delays are still better than New York.
Mr Lui said this in Parliament yesterday, in response to a question from member of parliament Lee Bee Wah, who wanted an explanation on the recent spate of breakdowns over the last few days.
Mr Lui said that the disruptions are "regrettable" but insisted that train reliability has seen "significant improvements in recent times".
He detailed that the number of delays lasting more than five minutes on the North-South and East-West Lines has reduced from 1.8 per 100,000 train-km in 2011 to 1.3 in 2014, which he said is an improvement of more than 25 per cent in three years.
But "we can do better", he said. Still, Mr Lui insisted that Singapore is doing better than New York.
“The current delay rate is more than twice as good as New York City’s rail lines, but we can do better, as there are other systems, such as in Hong Kong, that have fewer delays. I had instructed LTA and SMRT to get to the bottom of the recent disruptions," he said.

Mr Lui also said that SMRT has said that it will thoroughly review and strengthen its maintenance regime, such as by setting up a Maintenance Operations Centre, and also by increasing engineering resources, and training ground staff to handle minor maintenance issues.
LTA will also conduct more audits on SMRT and send in its engineering support to help SMRT.
It is peculiar why Mr Lui would compare Singapore's system with New York, when the New York train network began operations in 1904 while Singapore's network only began operations in 1987.
In fact, where Hong Kong's system began operations in 1979 and is still doing better than Singapore, this already exposes the flaw in Singapore's rail system.
Moreover, it was revealed a few years ago that the reason why Singapore's system is poor is also because it spends the lowest of rail maintenance as compared to the other two.
