I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Singapore’s Minister Mentor, Lee Kuan Yew. . He hasn't held that post for years!!!

The US has a tradition of referring to high officials by their highest or last office held. So, even now, they'd refer to Bill Clinton, Bushes Senior and Junior as Presidents Clinton and Bush.
