SINGAPORE - Consumers can rest easy about the Milo tins and refill packs sold in Singapore as they are manufactured here, Nestle Singapore clarified with The Straits Times (ST) on Monday evening.
It confirmed there have been no such counterfeit product incidents reported in Singapore.
The products come with a "Made in Singapore" label, it said in response to queries on the Milo Singapore Facebook page.
Customers had asked if these Milo products in Singapore were affected by the fake Milo found in Malaysia, and Nestle replied: "The incident reported in the media does not refer to Milo in Singapore. Milo sold by Nestle Singapore is manufactured in Singapore at our Jurong Factory and comes with a differentiated label with the statement 'Made In Singapore'."
A spokesman told ST: "Nestle assures consumers that we are committed to providing the best quality products.
"The safety and quality of our products is a non-negotiable priority for Nestle, and we are taking all necessary steps to protect the public from unscrupulous illegal operators who engage in manufacturing, distributing and/or selling counterfeit Nestle products."
The authorities in Malaysia have seized RM250,000 (S$94,058) worth of imitation Milo in Negeri Sembilan, prompting Nestle Malaysia to embark on a campaign to educate its customers on how to spot the fake from the real thing.
It posted a photo on Facebook showing consumers how to distinguish fake Milo packaging by looking at the perforation on every pack.
Major supermarkets - Sheng Siong, Cold Storage and Giant - told ST that they get their Milo only from Nestle Singapore.
FairPrice said that its Milo comes from Singapore and Australia.
A spokesman for FairPrice said that its outlets carry Milo only from authorised manufacturers and distributors which are approved by AVA.
"Our stores only carry Milo powder made in Singapore and Australia. To ensure food safety and quality, our suppliers meet very strict requirements such as product authenticity, quality and supply chain standards."
A spokesman for the Agri-food and Veterinary Authority(AVA) said that Milo products sold in Singapore are mainly manufactured locally and that small quantities are imported from other countries such as Australia and Malaysia.
"So far, we have not received reports of any fraudulent Milo products being sold in Singapore," the spokesman added.
AVA advised consumers to buy Milo products from reputable retailers.
