SINGAPORE: The average net monthly earning of taxi drivers in 2014 was S$3,173 for a single-shift operation, and S$5,933 for a two-shift operation, said the Minister of Manpower Tan Chuan-Jin on Thursday (Mar 5).

Mr Tan said this in a written response to Member of Parliament for Tampines GRC Irene Ng Phek Hoong’s Parliamentary question on the average annual salary of taxi drivers in Singapore. Ms Ng also asked about the numbers and educational qualifications of taxi drivers.

In response, Mr Tan said that as of December 2014, "about 98,000 Singaporeans held a Taxi Driver’s Vocational Licence", of which "about 56,000 of them were registered with taxi companies".

He added that about four in five were aged 50 and above, and over nine in 10 possessed non-tertiary educational qualifications.

“We do not have data on how many taxi drivers were formerly in PMET (professionals, managers, executives and technicians) jobs,” Mr Tan said.

The truth is that not many PMETs are driving cabs, not enough to warrant compiling of data. That is why majority of sinkies vote for PAP. Because PAP has ensured that majority of sinkies are well-educated and can find PMET jobs.

i have worked in population census before when i was a teenager. there , all kinds of data is important and we even have to call the sinkies personally until get fucked. they have the data but refuse to publicise, that's the real reason!

The only way that the Minister can come up with this number is if they polled all the taxi companies, and got their gross revenues from the meter readings of all their drivers and divide it by the number of drivers to get the average of $3137. The taxi companies know how much they charged the drivers for rent, But they have no idea what the other cost component, fuel, amounts to. The drivers do not need to report the amount of petrol they buy. So, this amount that TCJ is giving has to be the gross. So, probably the take home pay is around $2000 for a taxi driver after deducting petrol?

Will be interesting to know the accident rate of double shift drivers. They are risking their lives and limbs and those of their passengers. Fair?

on the "APPLICATION FOR VOCATIONAL LICENCE" form by the LTA, there are 2 fields:
1. Employment Status - Employed / Self-Employed
2. Occupation
simple download from onemotoring website or other websites will have show it.
wait, maybe they'll change/ amend the form after this hoo-haa?

saying that they do NOT have the data, is not right. obviously they have data.
alternatively, Mr Tan doesn't know that they do indeed have the data after all?
alternatively, the do have the data but it is a smoking gun that leads to other issues/queries, therefore they'd rather say that they do not have the data at all?

sorry all, just noticed a flaw in my post, after reading that Mr Tan's statement more carefully.
edited-addition:
i don't really care whether they were formerly or currently PMET.
if formerly = means they most probably got retrenched or retired, etc.
if currently = then i'd ask why do they need a taxi side-line, does their PMET job not pay well enough? + they don't have to work OT to meet deadlines, and have time to drive taxi?

How much the rental per day?? $150 - $180?? say $150 plus 7% GST = $160.50, Diesel, Petrol or LPG? or? per day, just take the basis, rental cost, say 31 days = $160.50 x 31 = $$4,975.50. Per day $160.50 / 12 hrs running the taxi, each hour, you must drive to cover $13.38.....just do the sums....& you will know..it is another "wayang"...

OH!....the earnings is so good that...we see so many taxis on " BUSY" or when they see you, switch from Taxi to "BUSY"...they must be making $10,000 a day... ha ha ha ha

The fact that taxi drivers can earn such an excellent income in a single shift shows just how good the PAP is at lifting living standards across the board.

Yes it is for someone as lowly as a taxi driver.

this is for sure. taxi drivers have no skill and their only skill is driving a car.
almost all 18yo and above can drive a car.
You can ask any westerners teenagers if they drive cars or not.

taxi drivers will eventually be displaced by driverless taxis. a driverless merc prototype is spotted undergoing test drives in sf. so far so good. no accidents.
