Victoria Falls: Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe celebrated his 91st birthday with a lavish party by the spectacular Victoria Falls on Saturday, prompting many Zimbabweans to question once again when he would leave office and who would succeed him.

Thousands of supporters sat in large white tents during the $1.3 million birthday celebration on a rolling golf course near the waterfalls, organised by his ZANU-PF party. His party has said the money was raised from individual and company donations.

Mugabe is a deeply divisive figure at home and abroad and is the only leader the southern African country has known since declaring independence from colonial power Britain in 1980.

In that time he has held tight to power and shows no sign of departing from the political scene.

On Friday night Mugabe told state television that he would not annoint a successor to take over the ZANU-PF party.

"I don't choose my successor, never. I was not appointed successor by anyone," he said.

"The successor can come from any level of the party. It may be either of the vice presidents, but it's up to the people."

Last December ZANU-PF re-elected Mugabe, making him candidate in the next election in 2018 when he will be 94.

Mugabe denies media reports he is suffering from prostate cancer and maintains his several trips to Singapore are for routine medical checks and to fix a recurring eye problem.

At his party in Victoria Falls Mugabe, who donned a striped black suit and red tie, showed no signs of ill health as he spoke for more than an hour, during which he attacked Western powers for imposing sanctions on Zimbabwe.

He was flanked by his two deputies, senior party and government officials, his children and wife Grace.

A local farmer, who runs a wildlife farm in Victoria Falls told a state-owned newspaper last month that he had donated wildlife meat, including crocodile and elephant, to be part of the menu for the party.

Mugabe was feted with poetry, song and dance by local musicians and one of his favourite Zimbabwean gospel singers performed for him, having travelled from the United States.

Critics say Mugabe is a dictator who wants to rule until he dies. They accuse him of human rights abuses, rigging elections and running one of Africa's most economically promising nations into the ground.

But in some corners, Mugabe is feted as a nationalist hero who triumphed over colonial power Britain on the battlefield and at the ballot box, and who remained steadfast in his commitment to the promotion of black African power.

That's also the good thing about seeking medical treatment at Gleneagles Hospital. No quacks like those found in CGH and NUH.

Robert Mugabe eats a zoo for 'obscene' 91st birthday party

Elephants were slaughtered to celebrate the Zimbabwean president's birthday

Robert Mugabe isn't known for his subdued taste, and his million-dollar birthday was just as extravagant as people have come to expect.

The ZANU-PF leader saw in his 91st year with the slaughter of wild animals, including an elephant, which were cooked and served to his guests.

His party took place at an exclusive lodge, spa and golf course in Victoria Falls, and it was estimated to have cost $1million (£648,000). During the celebrations, Mugabe released 91 balloons into the sky with the help of his wife, Grace.

An estimated 20,000 people attended the party at Elephant Hills resort, which was put on to celebrate the birthday of the leader who has been accused of abusing human rights and democracy.

His guests were fed a young elephant, and two buffaloes, two sables and five impalas were also donated to the president by a local landowner. He also threw in a lion and a crocodile to be stuffed as an extra gift for Mugabe. On top of this, 40 cows were offered to the president by two members of his government. A second elephant is going to be shot and given to the Victoria Falls community.

Held a week after his birthday, the celebrations were described as "totally unethical" by wildlife conservationists, and "obscene" by members of the opposition.

"All the money that has been collected to bankroll this obscene jamboree should be immediately channelled towards rehabilitating the collapsed public hospitals, clinics and rural schools in Matebeleland North province," said MDC spokesman Obert Gutu.

On top of the animals, seven cakes were also on offer at the party. One of them was in the shape of the African continent, and most of them were the size of a single mattress.

Guests were also treated to a 90-minute speech, in which Mugabe decried American sanctions against Zimbabwe.

The USA "can't have it both ways," he said. "If they want to be friends then they must be friends with us in total and we allow them to have some safaris. But they can't say 'allow our people to visit, allow our people to have safaris, to kill our lions and take safari trophies to America'."

Sounds like there aren't many animals left in Zimbabwe anyway.
