Debtor-turned-harasser arrested

AsiaOne Wednesday, Feb 25, 2015

SINGAPORE - A 24-year-old man who owed money to loansharks and later worked for them by harassing other debtors has been arrested.

The police said in a statement on Wednesday that the Police cameras at Block 264 Boon Lay Drive and Block 758 Jurong West Street 74 captured images of the suspect in action on Jan 21 and Feb 14 respectively.

He was later arrested on Feb 24 at Block 613 Choa Chu Kang Street 62. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect had been splashing paint at the doors of debtors' residences and defacing the adjacent walls with loan-shark graffiti.

The suspect will be charged in Court on Feb 26. Under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of up to five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than three and not more than six strokes.
