A Ryanair flight was forced to divert to Denmark after a drunken passenger took off his top and began throwing punches on the plane.

The flight, which was on its way to Dublin from Riga in Latvia, made an unscheduled landing at Aarhus Airport, in Denmark, on Tuesday, where the man was arrested.

Passengers on the flight tried to calm the man down and he was eventually ‘subdued and tied up’, the Copenhagen Post reported.

Video footage captured during the flight shows the passenger stood near the toilets semi-naked and flexing his muscles.

Peter Hallstrøm, from East Jutland Police, told the Daily Mail : “A plane was diverted because of a drunk person, so we had to arrest him.

“He was uneasy on board the aircraft, and the staff could not handle him.”

He added the man was not violent towards anyone.

Police said he did not resist arrest and spent the evening sobering up in a police cell.

It is unknown if he will face any criminal charges.

A spokesman for RyanAir said the passenger has been banned from using the airline.

He said: “This flight from Riga to Dublin diverted into Aarhus after a passenger became disruptive in-flight.

"On arrival, police removed and detained this passenger before the aircraft departed to Dublin. We are fully assisting the police with their investigations and the individual has been banned from travelling on our airline.

"We will not tolerate unruly or disruptive behaviour at any time and we sincerely apologised to other customers for any inconvenience caused. The safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our number one priority."
