SINGAPORE - A team of archaeologists digging at an excavation site in front of the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall have managed to haul up 400kg of artefacts in less than two weeks.

Most of these artefacts, which include Chinese ceramics, jars and figurines, are at least 700 years old, dating as far back as the Yuan dynasty period or 14th century.

There's practically nothing to unearth here. There're only MRT tunnels and underground pipes. Even human remains are not spared by the govt. Archaeologists and paleontologists here sure will starve to death.

Indeed. If they're not properly trained, they might have inadvertently damaged the relics while digging for them or handling them.

Also, where did they gate the '700-year old' figure from? Have the relics been carbon dated or assessed by experts?

Ancient Singapore (Temasek) was destroyed by the Javanese a few hundred years ago. The slaughter turned the soil RED.... hence we have Redhill (bukit Merah)

Then the Thais came and occupied the land. In 1400s, a Javanese prince Parameswara came to Singapore to take refuge from the Majapahit kingdom. He murdered the Thai governor, then he fled to Malacca where he rebuilt his strength and kingdom. The Thais wanted to bring him to justice on 2 occasions, but they were defeated by the Malays in Malacca.

At this juncture, Admiral Cheng Ho (Zheng He) from the Great Ming Dynasty was just passing by. Parameswara leeched onto him for protection, to the extent of visiting the Ming Emperor in China to pay homage. The Ming Emperor favoured Parameswara and granted protection for him from the Thais. The Emperor also gave his daughter Princess Hang Li Po to Parameswara as wife. The retinue together with Chinese traders formed the original Chinese Peranakan population of Malacca.

With the rise of Malacca, Singapore fell into the back-waters until Raffles appeared in 1819.
