A Briton in Spain has been arrested on suspicion of murder after he allegedly punched a suspected paedophile he caught filming his daughter in a restaurant.

Witnesses claimed the 40-year-old father, named locally as Kainth Davinder, attacked the German man in the upmarket resort of Sotogrande, after snatching an iPad out of his hand and finding photographs of his young daughter on it.

The 43-year-old victim, named locally as Sandro Rottman, was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards.

Detectives later revealed that he had been arrested last month for possessing indecent images of children.

The incident is understood to have taken place late on Saturday night in a restaurant called The Spinnaker in the port area of the popular resort.

Paramedics called to the scene rushed the victim to a hospital in La Linea on the border with Gibraltar but he died shortly after arrival.

A source at the local Guardia Civil, which is investigating, said: "We believe he died as a result of the single punch he received but this is yet to be confirmed by the post-mortem results."

The restaurant owner, who asked not to be named, said: “It all happened very quickly. The German man appeared to be taking pictures of everyone, not just the British man's daughter.

“It all seemed very innocent to me. The British man was with his family. He seemed to get very upset all of a sudden and punched the other man before anyone could stop him.

“He'd already paid for his dinner and left immediately. The German man is very normal. I knew nothing about him being arrested last month.”

An investigating magistrate is understood to have launched a probe but no formal charges have been laid.

Sotogrande is an upmarket resort and has been a favourite of Sarah Ferguson and her daughters Beatrice and Eugenie.

A spokesman for the Civil Guard based in Algeciras, confirming the arrest, added: “The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning when local security guards phoned police to inform them there had been an assault in a restaurant.

“Paramedics were already at the scene when officers arrived and they transferred him to La Linea Hospital where he died.

“Police arrested the alleged aggressor at his nearby home with information given to them by witnesses.

“The incident happened because of a video the victim had been recording of the British man's daughter.

“He snatched the tablet he was using and when he discovered there were images of his daughter on it, threw it to the ground and assaulted him.

“The victim had been arrested by the Guardia Civil a few days earlier for possession of child pornography."

A police source added: “The victim was eating alone and the British man was with his partner and one or two daughters.

“We don't believe he had any idea about the German man's arrest for possession of child pornography.

“He was the only person arrested. It wasn't part of a bigger operation. However our investigation was ongoing.”

Photographs have emerged of a British man arrested on suspicion of killing a suspected German paedophile with one punch after he found him filming his young daughter on his iPad.

Devinder Kainth, 40, is said to have attacked Sandro Rottman, 43, who was arrested over child pornography a few days before his death, at Spinnaker restaurant in Sotogrande, on the Costa del Sol in Spain.

Mr Kainth, a boxer and gym fanatic who goes by the name Victor, allegedly threw Mr Rottman's iPad to the ground on Sunday after seeing him filming his young daughter, who is believed to be under the age of eight.

He is being held at high security Botafuegos Prison, in the southern port of Algeciras, the Daily Mail reported, after reportedly knocking Mr Rottman to the ground with a single punch.

The owner of the Spinnaker restaurant told the Mail that after an afternoon of "friendly chatter", the British man told his family to leave.

"Devinder looked at Sandro's iPad and found pictures of his family which had been taken earlier that evening," he said. "Five seconds later he hit Sandro so hard he fell to the floor."

A staff member who watched CCTV footage of the incident added: "He dragged him along the floor like a dog."

Mr Rottman, who some reported as having a drink problem, died in hospital of his injuries.

According to police, says before the attack, Mr Rottman had been charged with possessing child pornography and was awaiting trial, but it is not known whether Mr Kainth, who has appeared before a magistrate and been remanded in custody on suspicion of homicide, was aware of the fact.

Mr Rottman, who was a web designer, recently posted a photo on Twitter of himself at the exclusive resort of El Octogono Beach Club in Sotogrande, holding a young child. He wrote: 'Just finished a day with the most beautiful girl in the Beach Club of Sotogrande. Hope one day I will have one my own.'

Mr Kainth's partner Gemma Hawkins, 31, the mother of his daughter and two sons, has been interviewed by police.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We stand ready to provide consular assistance if requested."
