Networking and making friends has its advantages, not privileges. It is the same in school and in the workplace. Why do you think so many people join clan associations, grassroots, church ministry, charitable movement, hobby clubs, school alumni associations?
People also don't pay a ton of cash just to use the swimming pool and golf course at the country clubs.
So you are preaching networking and guan xi? And hence openly condoning corruption, shouldn't awards be based on ability and meritocracy? Shame shame and you are from grass roots.
I am not preaching anything. Just telling you the ways of the world, and how successful people climb up the ladder. It takes time and effort to get to know people, communicate well with people and to share with them your ideas. If you are talking just about pure ability, then you are talking like an employee, not a towkay.
Singapore is where it is today because while successful people do network a lot, they also have to prove their worth. Nepotism and guanxi can only carry you so far before your friends and associates find you a burden because you are incompetent. When that happens, they will disavow you and sever working relations with you. Even in the world of guanxi, there's no permanent friends, only permanent interests. And in a developed society like us, no one wants to have permanent interests with someone who depends primarily on bribes and nepotism to get the job all the time.
Your talk is cheap, we all know how many and who are those who get in the "circle" through connections and networking, and are incompetent but still there and even for those who are seemingly competent, we may never really know if someone out there was actually better but not selected due to not having the proper network, all your points are nothing but just mere rhetoric.

Many construction bosses join grassroots with the intention of getting gov projects. Often they try to get into gov good book by sponsoring grassroots events and I even heard hougang cc was build FOC by one of them. In return pap awarded them with gov projects with taxpayers' money. This is how the whole system works.
This is how things work in any country. There is nothing wrong with contracts being awarded to companies that are known to government officials and which can be trusted because they have a proven track record of being good corporate citizens.
As for awarding contracts with taxpayer money your remarks do nothing but show how naive you are. ALL government expenditure around the world comes from the taxpayer. That's how countries with tax systems operate. How else to you expect the government to fund infrastructure projects?
I think there is something seriously wrong with many Sinkies. Just because we join political party, serve in grassroots, do charity work does not mean that we are not out there to serve our own interest as well.
