KHAW BOON WAN: THERE WILL NOT BE A COMMERCIAL COLUMBARIUM BUILT IN FERNVALE

29 Jan 2015

Khaw Boon Wan, the Minister for National Development, explained in parliament that there will be no commercial columbarium at the site of a proposed Chinese temple in Sengkang West.

He also noted that this was the first time that a site intended for a place of worship was awarded to a company not affiliated with a religious organisation.

Khaw said "We now understand that the winning tenderer for this site, Eternal Pure Land Pte Ltd, is actually a private company without any religious affiliation," he said.

"From what we know, the plan of the company is to run a commercial columbarium on the site. This is not in line with our plan for the place of worship site."

It is curious that the government was ‘unaware’ of this fact earlier and in fact had been defending the plans saying that residents were already told about the plans in the fine print of the brochure.

It seems that after enough public pressure, they have changed their tune and are backtracking as they realise that this could be an issue that will lose them votes in the next elections.

Khaw claimed that they had actually been unaware that the company awarded the land, Eternal Pure Land, was not a religious organisation.

He said that they had thought the company was a vehicle for a religious organisation.

This casts even more doubts on the government’s process of awarding land. It means that they do not even conduct background checks on companies that they award land to.

Mr Khaw said that the MND will ensure the land is only used for the original plan of a Chinese Temple and it is now in discussion with Eternal Pure Land to ensure that this is achieved.

This is not the first time the government has failed to do background checks on the companies they engage. LTA recently awarded a huge road project to a company that didn’t even lodge financial statements to ACRA and in the end, the company went bust and stopped works without finishing the project leaving residents with half closed roads.

LTA OFFICER REFUSES TO ISSUE SUMMONS TO ILLEGALLY PARKED PAP GRASSROOTS CARS

26 Jan 2015

An angry Singaporean recorded a video of the blatantly bias behaviour of an LTA Officer who refused to issue parking summons to cars which were parked illegally outside Siglap South Community Club.

The CC was apparently hosting an event with a PAP MP. Many grassroots leaders had come and parked illegally on the road for the event.

Other road users were blocked by the cars as there were dozens of them parked on double yellow lines around the CC.

One LTA officer who was in the area was asked by he wasn’t summoning the cars illegally parked and one passerby video-taped the LTA officer who explained that his supervisor had asked him not to issue any summons to those cars.

In the video, the Singaporean is heard asking the LTA Officer if he had the authority to issue summons, and if he thought the cars were parked illegally and whether he thought he should summon them.

To all the questions, the LTA officer said yes, but later said that he needs to listen to his supervisor who asked him not to summon them.

Check out the video here: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=929251673786667&set=vb.416856241692...

Do you think PAP Grassroots leaders should be above the law?

When was the last time you were able to park on a double yellow line and not be summoned by the LTA officers on duty?

No transparency. Government hiding statistics.

[h=1]Provide separate income data on citizens, PRs[/h][h=2][/h]

IT WAS a delight to read Ms Radha Basu's commentary ("Make foreigners, PRs count in income data"; yesterday).
I had written a similar letter in The Straits Times Forum ("Employment rate: More data, please"; Dec 3, 2013) , calling on the Government to distinguish between citizens and permanent residents when publishing income data, including those for households.
However, I did not see a reply to my letter, and this year's statistics continue to lump such data under the umbrella of "Singapore residents".
It would be timely for the Government to explain why the data has not been made more transparent, given the difference in income levels highlighted by Ms Basu.
If there are concerns that such transparency would cause further divisions in society, it would seem more effective for the authorities to introduce measures to close any gaps, rather than keep the picture vague.
