[h=1]NSF SENT TO DB FOR COMPILING A LIST OF NSF DEATHS OVER THE YEARS[/h]

Post date:
20 Mar 2013 - 8:59am

PTE Tan was an NSF back in 2008, serving as an Armorer Technician. Outside of NS duties, he enjoyed blogging but he never thought that his blogging would get him into so much trouble. He shares his story with us.
In an interview with TRS, PTE Tan shared that he was sent to DB for a charge of 'general disobedience' apparently for a particular blog post he has posted previously.
The post in question was just a list of reported NSF deaths questioning what NS is really for:
1968 [Source]
First reported training death in October 1968. In that incident, Recruit Allen Tan Chong Huat, 19, was stung by hornets in the Chua Chu Kang forest. He was rushed to Taman Jurong Camp but there was no doctor on duty there ( military doctors then clocked an 8am to 5pm shift). What’s more, the garrison’s ambulance was out on another call. So Recruit Tan’s officers rushed him to the main road to flag down a passing vehicle. It took an hour to get him to hospital.
1985-1986 [Source]
*RSAF accidents (in which pilots ejected): 1986 TA-4 off Tengah, 1986 Hunter Philippines, 1985 A-4 off Tengah, 1985 A-4 in Philippines
April 1984 [Source]
Three SAF soldiers died over a span of 10 days. Recruit Sim Keat Kee, 19, collapsed after a 2km run. Lieutenant Koh Meah Wan, 23, was killed during an exercise at Sungei Gedong. And Recruit Bak Yow Hock, 17, died at the School of Naval Training.
Jan 1987 [Source]
The SAF’s deadliest accident took place on Jan 24, 1987, when six lives were lost in a helicopter crash. Staff Sergeant Goh Kim Loong, Corporal Ramiya Mohan, Lieutenants Ng Soon Hup, Siow Poh Guan and Wee Tong Leong and Captain Lakbir Singh died after an air force UH-1H Huey crashed 14 nautical miles south-east of Brunei International Airport.
All NS deaths prior to 1997 are largely unreported from the PAP Government, SAF and state-controlled media.
1997 [Source]
2 un-named NSFs were killed when their FH-2000 155mm heavy artillery gun blew up in New Zealand because of a defective Made in China fuze. One NSF was killed in Singapore after an unexploded warhead from a misfired Armbrust light anti-tank weapon picked up by infantrymen blew up. Five others were injured, including a Lieutenant who lost his arm.

The list has been maintained and is still kept up to date with the reported deaths of NSF.
When PTE Tan was informed of his sentence, he was not given further details of the charge. He was simply told that he would serve 5 days in DB for 'general disobedience'. His CO then advised that he should not appeal the matter or the sentence would become 40 days.
PTE Tan didn't really know what other options he had so he just served his 5 days without protest. He shared that in DB he didnt have a name, he simply had a number. They were forced to follow a strict routine everyday and he was serving alongside others charged with AWOL and starting fights. His DB officer was surprised with Pvt Tan's charge saying he was the first person he'd encountered that had been sent to DB for blogging.
Is it fair that charges can be brought against a person without divulging any details and threatening with a longer sentence if they appeal? This is the kind of treatment Singaporeans enjoy while outside, all we seem to see is preferential treatment of foreigners. Is this fair?

Editor's Note: Details from this article have already been forwarded to MinDef for clarification on the proceedures for bringing charges against servicemen. No reply as of yet.

The list is not very detailed. There were many more deaths of people who died e.g. at SAFTI during live firing, in Taiwan, in Brunei,.... Many have died & the PAP gov't is responsible for these deaths so I am not surprised that they want to keep it a secret:rolleyes:

The list that is compiled by this chap does not include the military court martial cases. those are not public record. His list is only those reported in the newspaper and under coroners purview. The court martial cases in which death resulted are not included and are close to 3 times as many as what he listed.

NSF was lucky he just did time for his blog telling the truths.

He could have been sued by Bargain Heng and the this NSF got to do CROWD FUNDING like what Roy did!

Sinkie never learn. You cannot tell the truths without voting that bugger out or if you die die remain balless then don't tell the truth.

Is this very hard to understand considerng that Sinkje are HIGHLY EDUCATED? LoL

That does not sound right. If you are charged with an offence in the SAF, you have the right to be defended by an officer. I have defended numerous personnel before. So, there has to be some kind of hearing or courts martial. Even if you plead guilty, you still have to do so in front of a courts martial and the panel of 3 judges. His CO is not the one to advised him not to appeal the decision. that advise should come from the officer assigned to defend him. In most cases, the defending officer is not the CO. Its some one else that may not even be in the same camp. Usually the CO is the one that brought the charges against him or authorized the charges against him, so any advice from the same CO is a conflict of interest. Also, the CO has no way to know what the sentence would be, so for the CO to say he will get 40 days is a lie. The sentence is imposed by the panel of judges not the CO, so there is no way the CO would know what the sentence will be if the blogger lost his appeal.

I was actually thinking of my ex-classmate who died during BMT. I also had to attended the funerals of people who died overseas during exercise Starlight. Also knew people who were in combat units who were medical boarded & transferred into service units.
