Time for banks to do the same for sinkies who refuse to settle their credit card bills. Same for bastard sinkies who are behind on their Medishield premiums, utilities arrears and HDB mortgage payments.
The issues of the harassing tactics of legalized debt collectors is again in the news after the ‘Debt recovery unit’ from Double Ace Associates allegedly made a huge mess at a soup stall at Food Junction in Funan DigitaLife Mall.
The legalizes debt collectors allegedly came to the stall at the lunchtime peak period and shouted loudly while putting up banners and tipping things into the soup pots and putting empty bowls, the rice cooker, cash register and more onto the floor of the stall.
The men from the debt collection agency had come in in dark blue polo shirts at about 1:20pm and helped themselves to soup before harassing the cashier, disrupting business and making a giant mess.
The incident first happened on Thursday but the same debt collectors were back again on Friday making another ruckus.
Police and the Mall security had to be called into the area after which the debt collectors claimed that they were not the ones to make the mess.
While witnesses on site shared that the men had put plastic cutlery and condiments into the soup pot, the debt collectors clarified that they only put condiments into the soup.
Customers were disrupted and unable to order as the men told them that the shop was not in operation.
The owner of the soup stall, Mr Zhang, explained that he owed a supplier about $21,000 but he had not expected them to hire debt collectors so soon.
The owner of Double Ace Associates, Mr Frankie Tan defended his employees’ actions saying that debt collectors are only hired when the debtor has already been uncooperative. Because of this, it is necessary to make a fuss and embarrass the debtor in order to force them to pay up.
Mr Tan shared that the aim of his employees was to stop the business from operating effectively so that the debtor knows he has to pay up.
He insisted that his workers did not destroy any of the property in the stall.
Mr Tan explained that the debt has since been settled.
Meanwhile, the ruckus was big enough that the police had to be called in and the police have classified it as a case of mischief and are currently investigating.
