SINGAPORE - The union representing Singapore Airlines (SIA) pilots will call snap polls as early as next month, following a decision by the airline to stop offering re-employment to captains above the retirement age of 62.

The president of the Air Line Pilots Association - Singapore (Alpa-S), Captain Mok Hin Choon, turns 62 next month, and will have to step down.

He is among more than 90 captains affected by SIA's decision, which also affects pilots already on re-employment contracts that had allowed them to fly until 64.

They will now have to go by the end of March.

Capt Mok told The Straits Times yesterday: "We will have to call for elections quickly, possibly next month, to pick a new president."

The veteran pilot with more than three decades of flying experience, who was recently offered a one-year re-employment contract ahead of his birthday, said he was "surprised" and "disappointed" by the airline's decision.

Elected in April 2012 as union chief for a three-year term which ends this May, Capt Mok said that while the airline was well within its rights to terminate staff as long as at least a month's notice is given, affected pilots are concerned.

"It gives them very little time to look at other options," he said.

SIA spokesman Nicholas Ionides said the decision to let the pilots go is due to a situation of excess manpower, which has persisted in the last few years and is not expected to change until March next year at least.

He said: "The situation has not improved due to network changes, the challenging business environment and despite measures already taken to alleviate the surplus, including voluntary no-pay leave and voluntary movements to subsidiaries.

"We therefore regret that we have to take this decision to reduce the surplus further, and are no longer able to offer re-employment to captains beyond age 62."

SIA which employs about 2,400 pilots, will provide assistance "where possible" to pilots who are not re-employed to find alternative employment, he said.

The challenges have had an impact on the bottom line, with profits in the six months to the end of September dipping 55.5 per cent to $126 million.

This is the second time in as many years that the airline has cut flying years for pilots. In April last year, it stopped offering re- employment to first officers beyond age 62 and to captains beyond age 64. Before that, pilots could fly until the age of 65.

Alpa-S has approached the Manpower Ministry for assistance, Capt Mok said.

"In this case, there was neither consultation nor discussion, which makes a mockery of the whole spirit of tripartism and what it stands for," he said.

A spokesman for the Manpower Ministry, which is in discussions with the union, said that under the Retirement and Re-employment Act, employers should consider all available re-employment options within their organisations and identify suitable jobs for eligible employees.

If this cannot be done, eligible employees will receive a one-off employment assistance payment, as a last resort, she said.

Meanwhile, the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) said the decision by SIA not to rehire captains above the age of 62 is not a reflection of the overall state of the aviation sector.

Speaking on the sidelines of a media event yesterday, NTUC assistant secretary-general Cham Hui Fong said that in areas such as aircraft cleaning and baggage handling, employers are in fact struggling to find local workers amid a labour crunch.

Dear Gilbert

I refer to two articles posted on your website “insufficient employment
protection for local commercial pilots” and “letter of appeal to Prime
Minister’s office for the job security of SIA pilots.”

From the two articles, most people would have an idea how rough and tedious a
pilot career can be, in particularly in Singapore.

Typically, most if not all Singaporeans would join Singapore Airlines or
Singapore Air Force to kick start their flying career. Due to strict selection,
not many Singaporeans are selected for the Air Force. Having to say that,
Singaporeans can still opt to join SQ at 26 years old.

To gain cadetship with Singapore Airlines is not a walk in the park. For
start, as a Singaporean, you would be competing with other nationalities from
India,Malaysia or even Hongkong.


In terms of age (ALL foreigners can join SQ as young as 18), prospects and
liabilities such as Reservists, we have already lost at the starting line.
Singapore Airlines is probably the one and only national airline that offers
cadetship to other nationalities.


Is our country really lack of “aviation passionate” people or talented people
who want to be a pilot ? I doubt so.

Most countries implement “Locals First” policy in particularly in this
industry due to limited jobs. We do not have to look far for a good example. Our
neighbour, Malaysia has drastically reduced the number foreign pilots when there
were more than 500 unemployed self sponsored fresh pilots from the flying
schools.

Ironically, when Singapore Airlines has a surplus of pilots, they send the
local pilots to the middle east airlines while the subsidiaries of Singapore
Airlines such as SCOOTS, TIGER or SILKAIR still actively hiring foreigners.
Why
were we forced to leave this place where we called home? Why are we treated
secondary when we have done our dues for THIS country?

The biggest achievement of an airline pilot is to be able to sit on the left
side of the cockpit albeit being a captain. Most if not all countries have
strict upgrade/promotion policy and only their own local people have the
privilege to be upgraded to captain and not the foreigners.

The reason is simple, they understand most foreigners will eventually leave
the country after receiving the captain bar. Why do we need to give
opportunities to foreigners when they are merely using Singapore as a stepping
stone for something even greater ?


China, an aviation booming country who needs thousands and thousands of
pilots, have stated that only locals can be promoted to Captains and they should
not be overly reliance on foreigners.

they know, it is NOT sustainable and fair to the locals. Singapore is a
small island with a limited pilot jobs, do we really have to depend on
foreigners to fill the gaps ?

It’s not surprising and uncommon to see a 26 years old foreign first officer
promoting to captain in Singapore where Singaporeans would probably get their
LONG shot at 38 years old due to foreign management in OUR local airlines and
policy made by the government.


There are many Singaporeans like Mr. Lau Boon Huan who are risking their
lives working in overseas just because Singapore government does not have a
stalwart policy to protect the interests of the own people, Singaporeans.

Sadly, Mr. Lau Boon Huan is the casualty of such policy made by the
government of Singapore.

Zorro Lim would agree.

We are facing an excess of sinkie PMETs in most sectors, but there is a labour crunch in the taxi and security industries. Many of these sinkie PMETs have already been deployed to fill the labour shortage, and many more are clamouring for these jobs too. So what's wrong with asking excess and senile sinkie pilots to go be baggage handlers, while we replenish the ranks with young, foreign pilots who aren't burdened with NS liabilities? It's good for business.

This should not be a surprise that SIA treats its staff horrigibly. Don't they ground stewardesses who are too old:confused: Heard that it was 30 years old then they are booted out. Might be why the SIA girls are on the prowl for angmo or wealthy husbands because they know their time is limited.

I have never knowingly applied to work for a GLC because they are the worst companies to work for, unless of course you have connections.:rolleyes:

At 62 the airline pilot should have enough to retire in his 40s. In addition there is a shortage of pilots in SEA. So sure can get job one. In addition. At tat age n experience. These oldies should b training younger pilots etc instead of flying around.

There is very strong demand in China for pilots - their future is secure.

China built 100 new civilian airports in two years to cater for huge surge in demand.

Go to the airline websites and look at the recruitment requirements, wow, hiring by the hundreds

Singapore is such a small insignificant market our local pilots should spread their wings

They can even spread their legs and keep a PRC mistress to make it less lonely.

Capt Mok, can then, pretend, he is till piloting the Airbus A380, or in his past memory, piloting the Boeing 747 or the SIA Concorde....but he is now, "past due'...he will be piloting the baggage trolleys , something like the MD80....puuuttt, puuuttt!!...voom, voom... ha ha ha ha :biggrin:

This is interesting, the article says SQ employs 2400 pilots. Cathay Pacific employs 2700 pilots.But Cathay has a fleet of 173 aircraft (including cargo and Dragonair) while SQ only has a fleet of 108. So, it does seem that SQ has too many pilots. Of more importance is how many of their pilots are singaporeans and how many are FTs?
