SINGAPORE - Criminal lawyer Subhas Anandan, 67, died in Singapore General Hospital on Wednesday morning.
Senior lawyer Amolat Singh, a long-time friend of Mr Subhas, confirmed the news with The Straits Times.
He said: "Everybody is in utter disbelief. It's a very shocking piece of news, like a bolt out of the blue. He was out and about, always giving people encouragement. There was never a moment that we thought he was going so soon. He was always a fighter."
Mr Subhas had been in ill health, and he was diagnosed with heart and kidney failure last year. He had three heart attacks since 1978, lost one kidney to cancer in 2001, suffered diabetes and blocked intestines.
The prominent lawyer, a senior partner at RHTLaw Taylor Wessing and president of the Association of Criminal Lawyers in Singapore, had earned a reputation for defending notorious criminals, many a time pro bono.
He defended Anthony Ler, who hired a teenager to kill his wife in 2001; Took Leng How, a vegetable packer who befriended eight-year-old girl Huang Na, then killed her in 2004; and Leong Siew Chor, who chopped up a woman he killed in the Kallang body parts case.
Another client was ex-stewardess Constance Chee, who abducted her ex-lover's four-year-old daughter and caused her death after a fall from a flat in 2004.
In his career, he had taken on more than 2,500 cases since he was called to the Bar in 1971 after graduating from the then University of Singapore.
His second book, titled It's Easy To Cry, is due on the shelves later this year.
He leaves behind his wife, Vimala, 56, and son Sujesh, 24.

I think they might give him a posthumous title of Senior Counsel.

They should. If you look at the newly appointed SCs that include Edwin Tong the bloody PAP clown, Subhas is much more deserving even in his death.

Rest in piece Subhas. Your good deeds will forever be remembered, yours was a lifetime not wasted unlike the PAP bastards who pursue only greed.

RIP...

Amolat Singh's quote is quite funny, though. Subhas suffered from three heart attacks, kidney cancer, diabetes and blocked intestines, was undergoing dialysis and he said this is like a bolt from the blue.

Renowned Singapore criminal lawyer Subhas Anandan passes away

Renowned criminal lawyer Subhas Anandan passed away Wednesday morning at age 67 at Singapore General Hospital, according to legal services firm RHTLaw Taylor Wessing.
"Today RHTLaw Taylor Wessing lost one of our family members and one of its leading lights. Mr Subhas Anandan passed away this morning leaving behind his wife Vimala and only son Sujesh. Our immediate thoughts and prayers are with Vimala, Sujesh and their immediate family in this difficult time," they said in a statement.

He had reportedly been in poor health, having been diagnosed with heart and kidney failure last year.
Credited with the conduct of several landmark cases that have shaped the face of criminal law in Singapore, Subhas was a founding member of the firm, where he headed the its litigation and dispute resolution practice.

Law Minister K Shanmugam took to Facebook to express his sadness.
"Subhas’ strong sense of justice, has made him a legal legend to the Bar as well as general public... My heart is filled with sadness with Subhas’ passing," he said, describing Subhas as his "dear friend".
An old friend, lawyer Shashi Nathan from KhattarWong LLP, felt "shocked" and "deeply saddened" when he found out about the news at lunch time.

"He is someone who always stops to share his experiences with you. If you have difficulties in court, he has always been helpful especially with the young lawyers - that's always something we noticed. He has inspired people and that will be one of his legacies," said the 47-year-old, who has known Subhas for close to 30 years.

"Over 43 years of legal practice, Subhas has established himself as one of the most outstanding criminal lawyers the Singapore Bar has ever had. Subhas was a man of integrity, boundless energy, passion, compassion, generosity and a staunch defender of the rule of law," says his firm's senior partner, RHTLaw Taylor Wessing.
According to the description of him on his law firm's website, Subhas had handled well over 1,500 criminal cases, from murder and kidnapping to drug trafficking and white collar crimes.

He has represented, among others, local celebrity Quan Yifeng, the woman in the sex-for-grades scandal Darinne Ko as well as men involved with an underage callgirl in an online vice ring.
Subhas was also a founding member and first President of the Association of Criminal Lawyers in Singapore, an organisation that aims to contribute to the development of criminal law and the representation of the interests of criminal law practitioners in Singapore.

He is survived by his wife Vimala and his son Sujesh.

Many people went on social media to express their condolences over the lawyer's death.

Puccini and Luciano are both dead
Wonder if Kwan Chung is still alive?

E lucevan le stelle ...
ed olezzava la terra
stridea l'uscio dell'orto ...
e un passo sfiorava la rena ...
Entrava ella fragrante,
mi cadea fra le braccia.

O! dolci baci, o languide carezze,
mentr'io fremente le belle forme disciogliea dai veli!
Svanì per sempre il sogno mio d'amore.
L'ora è fuggita, e muoio disperato!
E muoio disperato!
E non ho amato mai tanto la vita,
tanto la vita!

And the stars were shining,
And the earth was scented.
The gate of the garden creaked
And a footstep grazed the sand...
Fragrant, she entered
And fell into my arms.

Oh, sweet kisses and languorous caresses,
While feverishly I stripped the beautiful form of its veils!
Forever, my dream of love has vanished.
That moment has fled, and I die in desperation.
And I die in desperation!
And I never before loved life so much,
Loved life so much!

To be honest. Criminal Lawers are scum of the earth..anyway all lawyers are. But for someone to defend a murderer. Serial killer or rapist etc who is guilty. As the lawer will just twist the facts to defend their client n in tat course let a guilty criminal go free deserves the really worse fate possible. If a suspect is innocent and he is defended than ok. As justice prevails. And believe u me. The lawyer knows his client is guilty and just twist the facts. Such lawers have no conscience. Like old fart.

RIP Subhas
