An Air Asia plane travelling from Surabaya, Indonesia to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control, Indonesia's Metro TV reported on Sunday.

QZ 8501 took off from Surabaya on Sunday morning and was scheduled to land at Changi Airport at 0830 hrs, according to Metro TV.

But the plane lost contact in Indonesian airspace at around 0710 hrs, said the report.

There are reportedly 162 people on board.

He said the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact.

There were 138 adults and 16 children, a baby and seven crew members on board the flight.

Transport Ministry official Hadi Mustofa said the aircraft, flight number QZ 8501, lost contact with the Jakarta air traffic control tower at 6:17am.

The Airbus 320-200 had 155 passengers and crew on board, another Indonesian Transport official said.

Mustofa said the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact.

The flight had been due in Singapore at 8:30am.

The Singapore airport said on its website the status of the flight was “delayed”, according to Reuters.

AirAsia, meanwhile, posted this on their Facebook page: AirAsia Indonesia regrets to confirm that flight QZ8501 from Surabaya to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control at 07:24hrs this morning.

At the present time, we unfortunately have no further information regarding the status of the passengers and crew members on board, but we will keep all parties informed as more information becomes available.

The aircraft was an Airbus A320-200 with the registration number PK-AXC.

At this time, search and rescue operations are in progress and AirAsia is cooperating fully and assisting the rescue service.

AirAsia has established an Emergency Call Centre that is available for family or friends of those who may have been on board the aircraft. The number is: +622129850801.

AirAsia will release further information as soon as it becomes available. Updated information will also be posted on the AirAsia website.

An AirAsia flight from Indonesia to Singapore with between 155 and 162 people on board has gone missing on Sunday morning, officials at the airline said.

Air Asia confirmed the news through their official Twitter account, which also included a link to a statement on their Facebook page.



The plane was carrying six crew and 155 passengers -- 138 adults, 16 children and a baby, Transport Ministry spokesman J.A. Barata told Agence France-Presse.

“AirAsia Indonesia regrets to confirm that flight QZ8501 from Surabaya to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control at 07:24hrs this morning,” a statement said.

“At the present time we unfortunately have no further information regarding the status of the passengers and crew members on board, but we will keep all parties informed as more information becomes available.”

“The aircraft was an Airbus A320-200 with the registration number PK-AXC.”

Transport Ministry official Hadi Mustofa told Metro TV that the Airbus 320-20 lost contact with the Jakarta air traffic control tower at 6.17 am local time. The plane lost contact somewhere between Kalimantan and Belitung island, he said.

He added that the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact.

An AirAsia flight travelling from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control, the company has said.

Indonesian media say 162 people were on board.

The aircraft, flight number QZ8501, lost contact with air traffic control just after 07:00am local time, AirAsia tweeted.

The company said that search and rescue operations were under way for the missing plane.

An official with the transport ministry, Hadi Mustofa, told local media the plane lost contact over the Java sea, which lies between Surabaya and Singapore.
