HANOI - A Singaporean man was questioned after a company in Hai Phong City was raided on Dec 17 for reproducing pornographic films, according to reports in the Vietnamese media.

Thanh Nien's online site reported that Mr Heng Lian Choo was the general director of Hong Kong company Huge Gain Holdings, which is located in the Do Son Industrial Zone. During the raid, police seized millions of DVDs, including 300,000 copies of pornographic films.

The report quoted a police press release as saying that the company allegedly produced and smuggled as many as 6 million pornographic VCDs and DVDs every month to sell in Vietnam and export to other countries.

The Singaporean general director was among five people arrested at a Hong Kong company in the northern port city of Hai Phong City for allegedly manufacturing and distributing porno discs.

Nguyen Thi Lan, chief prosecutor of Hai Phong, said Monday she had signed the arrest warrant against Heng Lian Choo, 48, general director of Huge Gains Holdings, his Chinese deputy Huang Sheng Ping, 23, and three senior staffers including a Chinese and two Vietnamese, news website VnExpress reported.

Huang directly oversaw the production, which is the biggest ever busted in Vietnam, the police said.

The police raided the company office at Do Son Industrial Zone on December 17, seizing “millions” of DVDs, including 300,000 copies of pornographic films that are banned in Vietnam.

Hai Phong authorities in 2003 granted the company a license to manufacture and process non-program CD, CDR, VCD, DVD and DVDR discs.

Initial investigation found that the company started to produce movie and musical discs, including porno ones, in 2013.

The sexually arousing discs mostly catered to orders from Guangzhou and customers in Nigeria, the police said. They also had clientele in Vietnam.

Heng said the company exported more than nine million discs a month.

He said he was aware that distribution of pornographic would constitute a crime in Vietnam, and thus had the discs well concealed from customs checks.

The police said the discs were coded in the way that only the company’s leaders and senior staffers knew which one were pornographic, not the common workers which were rotated on a regular basis.

The company also had several Vietnamese workers collude with local customs officials to make sure they would not scrutinize the discs, according to police.

Further investigations remain underway.
