Some jobs in hot demand

According to the Straits Times news report “Hard skills in hot demand next year” (Dec 16) – “Restrictions on foreign labour, as well as the slowing supply of skilled graduates in engineering, are contributing to the rising demand for those with the right skills for the job.

Engineers, for example, are particularly difficult to recruit, as not enough students are choosing to study engineering in university.”

Starting pay only $2,500

The table in the news article says that the lowest starting salaries for various jobs range from $2,500 to $3,300. You can see that all these jobs normally require a degree.

In hot demand, but pay so low?

If engineers are in such hot demand and short supply – why is it that their lowest starting salary is only $3,300?

Similarly, why is it only $2,800 for accountants and project finance managers, and just $2,500 for digital marketing specialists?

As much as 60% real pay decrease in 15 years?

According to a Straits Times news report (April 27, 2013) – “In 2007, the median monthly gross starting pay for a local university graduate was $2,750, meaning that half of them earned at least that. Last year, it was $3,050, up almost 11 per cent.

Because of the low pay, many singaporeans lack purchasing power. And coupled with the high cost of living many retail outlets and food courts are dying.

The worse is yet to come and I foresee recession for SG

About 30 years ago, lowest fresh grad pay is about $1500. However, a new jap car , Cat A type, cost about $20,000 or less and a new 5-rm flat cost less than 100K. Today, jap cat A car costs at least $100K (5 times) and new 5-rm flat cost about 500K (also 5 times). To enjoy the same level of comfort as that 30 years ago, a fresh grad should be paid at least $7500 (5 times of $1500). But they are getting $2000. Yet they are told that life is better than before.

If we do not make a conscious effort to note the changes that have taken place, we might be fooled to think that life is really better now. However, interestingly, when the change becomes far too extreme for the worse, no amount of propaganda will be able to convince the mass that things are getting better. They can just feel it. After that, the thinking of the mass will also begin to change, unknown to the people themselves. It will creep in silently and will " just happen ". After that all will be too late.

Human are not frog and will not get boiled in a pot. However, it is best to be more aware of the happenings and not jump out of the boiling pot only when it begins to hurt.

$2,500 starting pay is low?

Haven't got work experience and demanding this and that.

It is no wonder businesses are hiring FTs.

Our new grads need a reality check.

30 years ago I was already earning $4500 pm as an asst manager yet could not afford a small car costing only $20k and struggled for years to pay for my $50 k 4 room hdb flat. Cpf those days was 55% with the employer bearing more.
Those days earning this amount at mid managerial level seemed to be the norm.Today it seemed quite rare to find a 20 plus graduate earning this amount but cars and housing prices so much higher.
No wonder graduates have to postpone marriages and getting in huge debts servicing their BTO pigeon holes.

My friend graduated in Aussie this year, just got a job earning AUD$ 48K per annum, and he says shorter hours, better work life balance than in SG, only bad thing is that in SG can stay with family, in Aussie must rent.
