<!-- /tab-gallery-area --> SINGAPORE: The Public Transport Council (PTC) has received applications for fare adjustments from Singapore's two public transport operators - SBS Transit and SMRT.
SBS Transit submitted its application for bus and rail fare adjustments "amidst an environment of rising costs", it said in a press release on Friday (Dec 19).
SMRT said last month that it is seeking "a better alignment of fares and operating costs".

The PTC commenced its annual fare review exercise on Nov 19, and Friday is the deadline for public transport operators to submit their applications for fare review for consideration. The decision will be announced in the first quarter of next year, according to the PTC.

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew previously told Channel NewsAsia that the maximum allowed public transport fare increase for 2015 is 2.8 per cent.
To evaluate applications, the PTC will take guidance from the fare review mechanism and fare adjustment formula recommended by the Fare Review Mechanism Committee and accepted by the Government in Nov 2013.

When crude oil price increases, public transport fare increases just as fast, when crude oil price falls, public transport fare also increases irrespective.

When crude oil price plunged by 50% in the past six months, MOT and PTC had the audacity to champion a 2.8% public transport fare increase next year and we are only two weeks away from next year.

Common discussions in public thoroughfares pointed to an expected reduction in public transport fares on the back of plunging crude oil prices. Instead we are faced with the spectre of a 2.8% hike. It hurts, really hurts.

This is despite the hefty fare hikes just April this year pushing transport operators’ profits up by a whopping 63% as reported in the mainstream media.

Given what’s just described, only lunatics will act this way. This obsession with money and unrestrained profiting from the commuters will be brought to bear at the next general election.

The people who have decided on these mad fare increases must be consigned to the lunatic asylum after the next election. We cannot have mad people running around.

Transport cost is one of the main drivers of inflation and while crude oil price has plunged 50%, our inflation rate continues on a rapid climb. It does not make any sense at all. It is mad, totally mad living in Singapore.

As a member of the pioneer generation with zero income, every cent counts and I have many a time chosen to walk the distance to save on bus and MRT fares, till varicose veins in my legs bulged.

Pioneers in my cohort will not be deceived by the paltry $30/= one off deal Transport Vouchers anymore.

We will vote these mad people out the next general election, period!!!

Sinkies are cowards. Their ability absorb abuse from the FAP is legendary. No wonder so many people are flocking to join the FAP and its network, including foreigners like Yang Yin.

The real people who keep the public transports running are the bus/train drivers, the maintenance crew and the technical support people. Yet, they are also the lowest paid. For every $1 pay raise they get, the management will give itself a $50 pay raise, and think they are the real brains and brawn behind the transport. And General Desmond hired a lot of his fellow useless SAF kakis when they were about to be made jobless after compulsory retirement from the SAF. That's why fares still go up even though oil prices have plunged.

When fares were raised in 2010, they said this was necessary to maintain the MRT's high reliability standards.

When the MRTs started to breakdown, they said they needed to raise fares becase of "higher fuel costs".

Now that breakdowns have increased and fuel costs down, they're telling us fare hikes are necessary because Singaporeans are "earning more".

The Public Transport Council will always find excuses to raise fares. All this while, transport companies have been making obscene profits while pocketing taxpayers' money.
Next thing you know, they'll start telling us that a breakdown is not really a breakdown, just "trains treveling at slower speeds".
