Pennsylvania police hunt gunman suspected of fatally shooting family

Police in the US state of Pennsylvania are searching for a gunman who's suspected to have shot dead six members of his family, including his ex-wife. The man is a former soldier.

Police were hunting for a gunman suspected of going to three addresses in the Philadelphia suburbs on Monday and shooting dead six people.

The hunt for 35-year-old Bradley Stone, an Iraq war veteran, is focused around his Pennsburg home, although prosecutors say investigators are not sure of his exact whereabouts, nor how he is getting around. Stone is known to use a cane or a walker.

"As we stand here right now, we don't know where he is," said District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman.

Those killed include Stone's ex-wife, his former mother-in-law, former grandmother-in-law, former sister-in-law, the sister-in-law's husband - and that couple's teenage daughter.

Neighbors of Stone's ex-wife say they were woken by the sound of gunshots and breaking glass. Stone took his two young daughters from the home of his ex-wife but left them with a neighbor, and they are safe.

It is understood the couple had been involved in a custody dispute over their children, and had filed claims against each other. The outcome of the dispute is unclear.

Police searching for Bradley Stone found his body in the woods near his home in Pennsburg, north of Philadelphia, authorities have confirmed.

Bradley Michael Stone is suspected of gunning down his former wife, 33-year-old Nicole Stone, and then shooting dead other members of his family at different suburban locations near the north-eastern US city.

Mrs Stone was found dead after a neighbor saw Stone fleeing just before 5am yesterday with their two young daughters.

Police also found Mrs Stone's sister, Patricia Flick, mother, Joanne Hill, grandmother, Patricia Hill, brother-in-law, Aaron Flick, and 14-year-old niece, Nina Flick, dead.

Mrs Stone's 17-year-old nephew, Anthony Flick, is currently fighting for his life.

All the victims were said to have been shot at close range in two different houses.

The 35-year-old's ex-wife was said to have been killed at an apartment block in front of the couple’s young children, who were found unharmed at a neighbour’s home.

Stone and his ex-wife had been locked in a court fight over the children's custody since she filed for divorce in 2009.

Mrs Stone's neighbour, Evan Weron, said that Mrs Stone had been worried that her ex-husband would kill her.

He said: "She would tell anybody who would listen that he was going to kill her and that she was really afraid for her life."

Mr Weron added that Mrs Stone frequently talked about the custody dispute.

He said: "[Mrs Stone] came into the house a few times, a few separate occasions, crying about how it was very upsetting to her."

SWAT teams were later reported to have surrounded a house after finding the suspect’s vehicle.

A police source said the gunman was “barricaded” in the town of Souderton, the scene of one of the shootings.

But twice the suspect managed to evade snipers and officers with armoured vehicles and rifles surrounding the property.

Schools were closed while hospitals and other public buildings had their security tightened as SWAT teams assisted local, state as well as federal law enforcement officers conduct sweeps of the area.

Ex-Marine wanted in 6 killings commits suicide
Associated Press
By KATHY MATHESON and SEAN CARLIN 15 hours ago

PENNSBURG, Pa. (AP) — An Iraq War veteran suspected of killing his ex-wife and five of her relatives in a shooting and slashing frenzy was found dead of self-inflicted stab wounds Tuesday in the woods of suburban Philadelphia, ending a day-and-a-half manhunt that closed schools and left people on edge.

Bradley William Stone's body was discovered a half-mile from his Pennsburg home, about 30 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The 35-year-old former Marine sergeant had cuts in the center of his body, and some kind of knife was found at the scene, Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said.

Locked in a custody dispute so bitter that his ex-wife feared for her life, Stone went on a gruesome, 90-minute killing rampage before daybreak Monday at three homes in three nearby towns, authorities said. He bashed in the back doors of the first two homes and then smashed his ex-wife's sliding glass door with a propane tank.

The killings set off the second major manhunt to transfix Pennsylvania in the past few months. Survivalist Eric Frein spent 48 days on the run in the Poconos after the ambush slaying of a state trooper in September.

"There's no reason, no valid excuse, no justification for snuffing out these six innocent lives and injuring another child," Ferman said. "This is just a horrific tragedy that our community has had to endure. We're really numb from what we've had to go through over the past two days."

Stone's former wife, 33-year-old Nicole Stone, was found shot twice in the face in her apartment after a neighbor heard glass breaking and saw Stone fleeing around 5 a.m. with their two young daughters. The girls were later found safe with Stone's neighbors.

Also killed were Nicole Stone's mother, grandmother, sister, brother-in-law and 14-year-old niece. A 17-year-old nephew suffered knife wounds to the head and hands, and Ferman said he was in "very serious" condition.

The adults were shot. The teens were slashed and suffered blows to their heads; the nephew had a gaping skull fracture, authorities said.

"It's a relief that they found him," said Stone's neighbor Dale Shupe. "Now we know he's not out trying to do more harm to anybody else."

As the manhunt dragged on and SWAT teams swarmed through neighborhoods, at least five schools within a few miles of Stone's home closed, and others were locked down. Veterans' hospitals and other places tightened security.

Candy Rumford, whose family lives near where authorities found Stone's body, described SWAT helicopters "hanging above our house, hovering right over here in these woods."

Neighbor Alyssa Hettrick said the whole town had been on lockdown. She said authorities had tried to evacuate her home but her family has three dogs and decided to stay.

"So, it's kind of a huge shock to know that he was there all night while we were inside," she said.

Stone and his ex-wife had been fighting over their children's custody since she filed for divorce in 2009. He filed an emergency request for custody this month and was denied Dec. 9, Ferman said.

Neighbors said Nicole Stone would sometimes ask her apartment complex's maintenance staff to go in and check her place first because she was afraid he might be lying in wait.

"She would tell anybody who would listen that he was going to kill her and that she was really afraid for her life," said Evan Weron, a neighbor in Harleysville.

Stone was in the Marines from 2002 to 2008. His specialty was listed as "artillery meteorological man."

At a 2011 child support hearing, he said that Veterans Affairs deemed him permanently disabled and that he was collecting VA benefits, according to court documents. The VA had no comment Tuesday.

Ferman said Stone sometimes used a cane or walker. She said she had no evidence he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. Stone faced several driving-under-the-influence charges, and Ferman said he was undergoing treatment through veterans' court as part of his sentence.

Stone remarried last year and had an infant son. Neither his wife nor the son was injured. Nicole Stone became engaged over the summer, neighbors said.

8 children killed inside of home in Australia

Australian police investigating a report of a woman with serious injuries discovered eight dead children inside of a home Friday morning.

The children, ranging in age from 18 months to 15, were inside of a house in the Cairns suburb of Manoora, The Associated Press reports. The 34-year-old woman was still alive with stab wounds to the chest and rushed to a hospital, where she is in stable condition.

Police have not shared how the children were connected to the woman. "As it stands at the moment, there's no need for the public to be concerned about this other than the fact that it's a tragic, tragic event," Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar said. "The situation is well controlled at the moment. There shouldn't be any concern for anyone else out of this environment."
