PM: Opposition doesn’t articulate a vision for S’pore

At the PAP rally today (7 Dec), PM Lee said that the next General Election will be a “deadly serious fight”.

He said, “It will be about who forms the government, not how many seats the opposition gets.”

And it will be about whether Singapore continues to have a First world Government, and not about a First World Parliament, said Mr Lee, taking a dig at the WP’s theme on moving towards a First World Parliament at the last General Election in 2011.

Mr Lee said that every seat in the next GE will be a national contest, not a local one.

He also said that there are now different and louder voices in social media as well as the society. He said that some of these voices mean well while others try to mislead the public. He did not say which “voices” are the ones “misleading” others.

He added that PAP is bringing different groups together and putting forth a vision for Singapore. He said that the vision will be “fair to all groups” as PAP is a “national party”.

The opposition does not articulate a vision for Singapore because they are trying to avoid answering hard questions until they get elected, he said.

He said that opposition parties have been asking Singaporeans to vote for them so that they can act as a check on the PAP. But for every one more “checker” in Parliament, Mr Lee said there would be one less “doer, thinker and leader” in the PAP Government.

Rallying the 6,000 activists, Mr Lee said PAP will fight to win every constituency.

He added that PAP has already identified many promising candidates and a few potential office holders for the next GE.

Twelve members of PAP CEC were also elected by about 2,000 cadres today, with 2 additional CEC members co-opted. The 12 members who were voted into the CEC from a shortlist of 19 are:

Hahaha...LHL and his PAP are always trying to frame the battle for the Oppo. Why he never gets it...the voters want the Oppo to check and balance the PAP. Thats why they never listen to what the people want.

Continue to screw up lah...we need more and more checkers..

Finally, PM Lee reluctantly admits that Singapore's next General Election will be about who forms the government, and not just how many seats the opposition gets. It will be a "deadly serious" fight between the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) and the opposition.
"Mr Lee argued that the vision of a first world parliament set out by the opposition Workers' Party during the last election in 2011 has turned out to be an empty promise."

We do not agree with PM Lee's assessment of the opposition Workers' Party and find his remarks laughable.
It is nothing short of taking cheap potshots at the Workers' Party in order to tarnish their reputation for self-serving political agenda (constructive politics?).

But this is not something new as we have witnessed the despicable tactics used by the PAP against WP in their (PAP) town council politics.

During the Hougang and Punggol East by-elections, the PAP had either dishonestly or foolishly framed the by-elections as local or municipal contests when in fact was not.
So now Mr Lee said, "Every seat, GRC and SMC will be a national contest, and not just a local one. In addition, every seat will be a General Election, not a by-election."

Patriotic citizens of Singapore, don't be taken in or frightened by such fear mongering scare tactics of the PAP if you want a better Singapore for yourselves and your children.

How do you read PM Lee's comments?
A knee-jerk reaction or a confidence crisis brewing within the PAP under his lacklustre leadership?

"Mr Lee said the opposition do not see their duty as being to bring people together, solve problems or plan for the future. This is because the opposition have not articulated any vision for Singapore, as they say they cannot form the government."

This is another cheap potshot hurled at the opposition parties.
As far as we know, the opposition parties did come up with alternative policies but were instantly shot down by the PAP only to be adopted by the PAP after some modifications.

For example, the alternative housing policy articulated by the SDP and the nationalisation of public transport articulated by the WP, amongst many other suggestions.
And who in the right mind will say they want to form the next government in a dictatorial and oppressive environment?

"Mr Lee said that if Singaporeans accept this, Singapore will only see politicians checking each other, and there will be gridlock like in other countries. He added that for every one more "checker" in parliament there will be one less doer, thinker and leader in the government to serve the nation and the people."

What is wrong with having politicians checking each other?

Is it not the norm of democratic countries around the world?

It is precisely because of the lack of sufficient opposition members in parliament that the 6.9M Population White Paper was shoved down our throats.

And he talked as if only the PAP can attract able people to work and solve problems for Singapore.

True blue Singaporeans, do you want anymore of these nonsense from the PAP?

Dear PM Lee Hsien Loong

Thank you and your PAP team for putting your best for Singapore over the years. Under your leadership, the casinos, Garden By the Bay, Bishan River, Project Jewel and Jurong Gateway are some impressive world class infrastructures that aptly represented Singapore's progress and prosperity. However even with these accolades and achievements, today you spoke about a "deadly serious fight" in the upcoming General Elections.

If you have done well, shouldn't you express unwavering confidence that all Singaporeans have benefited from your work and you trust Singaporeans will make the right choice?

Or, somewhere in your blind optimism, you can sense a growing dissent against you and your party? You know there are policies Singaporeans do not compromise or negotiate with. Let's take your salary for example: Singaporeans believe you and your team do not deserve to be paid millions for substandard performance. Where is your sense of shame and honor to address this imbalance?

Oh no, you claimed that your million dollar salary alongside the 26% of the population earning less than $1500 a month is "realistic". When Singaporeans protested against the CPF Minimum Sum, what did you do? Your party launched a series of propaganda coordinated by the controlled-media and various ministries to influence public perception harping away how blessed it is to have CPF instead of taking any constructive actions like raising CPF interest rates or removing the Minimum Sum. Worse, you chose to sue a critic of the CPF policy, you have won the defamation suit but you have lost all respect from the people. People all over the world are now calling you a coward for using your position and power to squash criticisms.

The CPF and million dollar salaries are good national issues, but pardon me, there are better ones. We know you and your PAP team screwed up public transport by raising fares so public transport operators can make record profit from Singaporeans. We know you have also screwed up our housing policies yet your refused to reign in on the prices at the start of the property bubble. We know you have also screwed up education but refused to build more government-subsidized universities for Singaporean students. We also know you have screwed up our population policies, resulting in overcrowding and the influx of cheap foreign labour. We also know you screwed up manpower policies, Singapore just had our first strike and riot, ironically initiated by your beloved foreign talents. We know you screwed up healthcare, otherwise people wouldn't choose death over treatment.

In areas where you claimed you have done well, you have actually screwed up too. Take the economy for example, purchasing power have decreased due to relentless rise in cost of living and depression of wages. You claimed Singapore have high GDPP, yet our people are mostly in debt buying houses with money they do not have. You claimed Singapore have a first world education system, yet our people could not compete with foreigners with university degrees from Philippines and China. You claimed Singaporeans have adequate retirement, but CPF payout is so miserably low our old people who already have problems straightening their back have to wipe tables for a living. You claimed Singaporeans have world class healthcare, yet people are going into bankruptcy after any major illness. You claimed raising the GST will help the poor, yet it turned out the poor become the hardest hit from the waves of inflation which businesses took advantage of by the raise in GST.

Under your esteemed leadership, birth rate is at its lowest, income gap is at its highest, people are the most unhappiest, income is at its lowest, cost of living is at its highest, healthcare costs is at its highest and Singaporeans are working the most hours in the world. Your 11 years in power is evident to prove your incompetence. We don't need another 11 years to tell you that.

Taiwan's ruling party Kuomingtang and President Ma Ying Jeou have acknowledged their failure to serve their people and have since resigned. The Japanese ruling party Liberal Democratic Party has also lost the recent regional election. New leaders like Obama and Jokowi have done exceptionally well. Transparency and accountability has become the new world order. Please acknowledge that Singapore likewise, can survive without the ruling party. There is an army of talents waiting to take the PAP's place who can do better without obscene pay.
Please grow some shame and resign. We need a leader who worries more about our livelihood than the number of votes he'll be getting in the next election.
Regards

Cheated Singaporean

“Singapore is at a crossroads. How the country moves forward will depend on the choices that the people and their leaders make today. The incentives that those in power build into the system will determine whether the country progresses or stagnates. To that end, the ability of Singaporeans to question authority and to build a capacity for collective reasoning and debate is essential.”
Singapore’s Consul-General Jacky Foo Hong Kong did not object to that paragraph in the Wall Street Journal commentary of 27 November 2014 (“A New Vision for Singapore“).
He was rankled by some other observations, and had to put in his 2 cents’ worth. But you have to wonder about his mental state when he regurgitates stuff like these:

  • “in Singapore, the low-income have access to high-quality education, health care and public housing, like other citizens”
  • “Families earning just 1,000 Singapore dollars ($800) a month can afford to own a two-room apartment”
  • “Their wages have also grown by 10% (in real terms) in the past decade”
  • “The reality is that elections in Singapore are free and fair”

<ins id="aswift_1_expand" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: currentColor; width: 336px; height: 280px; display: inline-table; visibility: visible; position: relative; background-color: transparent; border-image: none;"><ins id="aswift_1_anchor" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: currentColor; width: 336px; height: 280px; display: block; visibility: visible; position: relative; background-color: transparent; border-image: none;"><iframe name="aswift_1" width="336" height="280" id="aswift_1" frameBorder="0" marginWidth="0" marginHeight="0" scrolling="no" vspace="0" hspace="0" allowfullscreen="true" style="left: 0px; top: 0px; position: absolute;" allowTransparency="true"></iframe></ins></ins>

You know the guy is obviously oblivious that many have sold their public housing flats to finance an overseas education because places in local universities were given up to “scholars” from PRC, that $1,000 a month can service flat ownership is a myth that has been debunked ad infinitum, his real wage growth statistic is off by at least a factor of 10 and, to quote his political master’s voice, “there is no such thing as fair play in politics”. Foo’smindless ramble reminds one of Michael Palmer’s first utterances when he was helicoptered into parliament at too tender an age: “Before I joined the grassroots organisation, I never knew there were poor people in developed countries”. If Foo is just as wet behind the years, we hope he stays away from ardent worshippers bearing tempting mangoes.

To be fair to Foo, he is just protecting his paycheck. All said and done, “he is out to make a political case and trim his sails to the wind.” What ex-minister George Yeo, also based in Hong Kong, eloquently penned as “going with the flow”.

"And this is exactly what LHL was tryng to do - create the sense of urgency among the vote swingers and deter them from voting opposition by reminding them the consequences of their actions might lead to a change of government. It a fact that policies in recent years under LHL had alienated alot of middleground voters and sensing the discontentment on the ground, LHL was merely capitalizing on the fact that Sinkieland voters in general feel insecure about changing government however unhappy they are because we don't have anyone capable of replacing PAP."

Yes, this is exactly what he is going to do this time. But I doubt if even he has much hope in this working as it once did. Singaporeans who are not on the gravy train stopped listening long ago.

It's official, the PAP and Lee Hsien Loong are scared shitless.

Unfortunately, I think this time the PAP will fight very dirty, because much is at stake. Dirtier than the incidents in the past: JBJ/Anson, Tang Liang Hong the 'Chinese chauvinist', loitering outside polling station etc.

It will be interesting to see if the MSM plays along with the zest they showed in the past.
