16 Singaporeans injured after tour bus skidded off Hokkaido highway

HOKKAIDO: A bus carrying 16 Singaporeans skidded off the Hokkaido Shimukappu highway in Japan on Tuesday (Dec 2), causing the driver and passengers to be sent to the hospital.

According to Japanese media reports, the incident happened at around 11.30am, and the bus slipped off the road near the junction of Shimukappu 237 Highway and Doto Expressway exit.

The reports also said that there had been an intermittent snowstorm in Shimukkapu in the morning, and quoted Japanese police as saying that the roads nearby were nearly frozen. The Japanese police have labelled the case as a bus slip accident and are investigating further.

The 52-year-old bus driver said: "I stepped on the brake right before the junction but it could not stop the slip completely."

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesperson told Channel NewsAsia that the Singaporeans on board the tour bus were treated for light injuries and have been discharged from the hospitals.

MFA also added that the Singapore Embassy in Tokyo has been working closely with the local Japanese authorities and the Singaporean tour company to give consular assistance to the affected Singaporeans.

I bet no Sinkie driver here has ever had the experience of driving in those conditions.

most likely due to black ice on the road. only fucktards will do a tour in hokkaido at the onset of winter.

The worst kind of ice because it is very difficult to detect. This type of ice has caused many plane skidding incidents on the ramps, taxiways and even on runways .

Agreed, no point going there now as it is too early and the scenery may not be that wonderful yet. Problem with Sg is they just go because it is school holiday. Most go tour not because they are there to enjoy the place at its most beautiful moment but more like performing hajj, a yearly affair so that they can tell everyone that they went to hokkaido this year.

like in banff in canada. either go in january when ski season is in full swing or in early october when it's cool but not snowing yet. but never in november nor early december when roads get slick from fresh snow and icy conditions. sinkies need to be educated on the perils of winter travel.

Maybe the environment that Sg are living in is "too safe". They are unaware of nature and its danger. They thought that since it is an organized tour, they are in safe hands as the locals should know best.

However, the young ones are better. They read up extensively before leaving. Organized tour is not in their vocabulary. However, safe driving, danger / survival in the wild are still alien to them. Being young, they don't understand that unforeseeable mishaps can still happen no matter how prepared we are.

as word spreads of mishaps and tragedy, hopefully sinkies will learn. it's part of growing up and learning about risks and dangers outside of the comfort cocoon of sg that the sg system and environment have created. a few lives and limbs sacrificed for the safety of many. unfortunately, it's necessary attrition and statistics for the benefit of the majority. and fortunately in this case, no deaths nor serious injuries, thanks to better and more experienced jap drivers. if this is in china, the outcome will be vastly more different. :o
