Casinos and Shopping Malls are Not The Answer

Amazing! there are at least 94 Malls/Shopping Centres in Singapore. It is a matter of time before some of these Malls go bankrupt

For a population of 5.4 million, 94 malls is not too many. Anyone who thinks that's too many doesn't know squat. That's 55,000 to 1.

to know whether it is too many or not, just look at the business at the Malls.

Do you often go to the Malls?

Not really, but the landlords and the REITs are doing very well, so the tenants must have the kind of sales that covers those ridiculous rents.

Of course, there will be some that cannot make it, but majority are doing fine

I see that many shops are struggling and some are just waiting for their tenancy agreement to end. If you don't agree with me, just visit any mall on a weekday and see it for yourself.

Take a look at the pathetic business at Poulet, Changi Airport, T3 and many others

Cut throat competition good for consumers!

There's no cutthroat competition they are all owned by the same companies mapletree investments owned by temasek corporation. The shops are the same the food courts are the same,I swear to god all the stalls are the same.fucking hell even the chicken rice and Yong tau foo and laksa taste the same.every mall every food court is a carbon copy.there is no individuality in SG,unlike Australia.

The Malls are so boring. As you said , they seem to duplicate one another. Kopitiam runs the food court in the Mall and Bossini is there, so is HangTen, Bata, NTUC Fairprice or Cold Storage, etc

I am not an expert, but i hope to see the following.
1) Bigger focus on R&D and innovations
2) Invest in translational companies that can translate the R&D and innovations into commercial solutions
3) Move away from manufacturing and more to service
4) Temasek and GIC should cater a portion of investments on small/medium size businesses, especially those that are highly innovative
5) Temasek/GIC/GLCs should adopt the big brother attitude and any investments overseas should insist on participation from our medium sized companies to help them grow. We have the financial muscle to push this
6) Wean off low cost labour and really really look at technology and processes to push for greater efficiencies. At the moment, its all a facade.

Yes, should have shopping malls. But if the pap thinks that shopping malls is the way to create growth, then it is dead wrong. Shopping malls are to serve a need not to create economic growth

Pappy dogs don't give a hoot about serving needs, they just wanna be landlords and charge heavenly rentals to suckers.

In time to come, Parkway Parade will also struggling because of I12 and the coming underground Mall at Marine Parade.

Are you kidding me? Go look at the original list of tenants in Katong I12 and compare with the surviving ones now. Given any weekday, the tenants at I12 have enough time to practice Taichi! Parkway on the other hand, carpark lots range about a hundred left at the top most level?

That's becos most of those clowns revel in rent-seeking and value transfer activities.

The thought of creating something scares the shit out of them.

Someone will say it's a criminal waste of resources :p:p:p

Building of more malls is a smart idea of the PAP. The malls are meant to be supported by a population of 6 million people and above, not just 3.5 million sinkies and 0.5 million foreigners and PRs. Now, whether you support the 6.9M or not is irrelevant. If we do not move towards 6.9M population, many of the malls will close down.
