SINGAPORE - Scores of Singaporeans have been sending their wishes for a speedy recovery to Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM) Goh Chok Tong, who underwent successful surgery on Saturday for prostate cancer.

Many, including grassroots leaders and volunteers who work with him in his Marine Parade ward, were surprised by news of his cancer, although book publisher Tan Wu Cheng said that his keeping quiet about it was typical of Mr Goh's low-key style.

"He likes to keep a low-profile. He doesn't want to worry his residents as he knows we will be quite bothered about it," said the volunteer, who has been with Mr Goh since he was elected MP for Marine Parade in 1976.

A statement from Mr Goh's press secretary on Saturday evening said the 73-year-old, who was prime minister from 1990 to 2004, had successful surgery.

His doctor, Dr Sim Hong Gee, senior consultant urologist in Gleneagles Hospital and visiting consultant at Singapore General Hospital, said Mr Goh is expected to make a full recovery as the cancer was localised and detected early. He will remain at SGH for a few days for observation.

Mr Goh, who had been holidaying in Fukuoka, Japan last week and returned home on Thursday, was expected to be present at a dinner and awards ceremony on Saturday night to mark the 60th anniversary of the People Action's Party.

Fellow Marine Parade GRC MP Seah Kian Peng told The Straits Times at the dinner that Mr Goh told him he would be going for an operation.

"I didn't get into the details ... Of course today he released a statement and the important thing is we're very happy that it was a very successful operation. Personally, knowing ESM, I'm quite sure he will come back stronger. I join all Singaporeans and residents in wishing ESM a full and speedy recovery."

More well-wishes and comments came in via social media, including on Mr Goh's Facebook page, MParader.

They included one from Kevin Quek: "Get better soon. And u would also be a good person to bring awareness to this problem n encourage early detection n treatment."

Added Anthony Ng, in a sentiment many others expressed: "Speedy recovery ESM Goh. Good leaders shall not be forgotten after all the good work you've done for Singapore."

Fellow Marine Parade MP and Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin's Facebook post wishing him a "smooth and speedy recovery" drew nearly 700 likes and 70 comments.

So too did Ms Tin Pei Ling, another Marine Parade GRC MP, who posted her wishes for a "speedy recovery!" That attracted 103 likes and 16 comments shortly after it was posted.

Prostate cancer is the third most common cancer among Singapore men after colorectal and lung cancer. The cancer forms in tissues of the prostate - a gland in the male reproductive system below the bladder - and usually occurs in older men.

probiotics are helpful for colorectal issues, which if not addressed properly and expediently can lead to colon cancer. the density, amount and variety of flora in probiotics determine potency and effectiveness. yakult doesn't have an adequate amount and variety of flora for acute cases. if taken regularly, it helps bowel movement, but it's not effective for colorectal health. probiotics sold in sg only go up to tens of millions in flora. probiotics sold in the u.s. go up to 400 billion flora.

for the multi-billion-flora probiotic, better let a certified lab do it, otherwise you may stumble with bacteria. easiest and cheapest way to have daily consumable probiotic is to make your own yogurt by buying yogurt and cultivating milk by adding yogurt to it.

You will breed other bacteria & end up in the hospital, if you do not die, you may end up having your stomach pumped...ha ha ha

What is Probiotic ?

Uploaded on Jan 2, 2008
Probiotic is opposite of antibiotic. The word anti (against) & bio (life) literally means "against life" and probiotic means "for life".

Former Singapore PM recovering after cancer surgery: spokesman

AFP News – Sat, Nov 22, 2014

Former Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong is recovering after successfully undergoing cancer surgery at a local hospital, his office said Saturday.

Goh, 73, "is expected to make a full recovery as the cancer was localised and detected early," his press secretary Heng Aik Yeow said in a statement to AFP late Saturday.

"(He) underwent a successful surgery for prostate cancer," Heng said, adding that Goh would remain at Singapore General Hospital for a few more days for observation.

Goh served as prime minister from 1990 to 2004, stepping down in favour of current prime minister Lee Hsien Loong, the son of Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew.

A former civil servant and top executive for Singapore shipping giant Neptune Orient Lines, Goh was drafted by the senior Lee to the People's Action Party and won a parliamentary seat in 1976 representing the suburban Marine Parade constituency.

Within a year, he was named minister of state for finance and later held other positions in the ministries of trade, education, and health.

Goh was serving as deputy prime minister when Lee Kuan Yew, now 91, picked him as his successor. Lee served as premier from 1959, when Singapore gained self-rule from colonial ruler Britain, until he stepped down in 1990.

Parliamentary Sitting: 9 September 2014

Mr Seah Kian Peng: To ask the Prime Minister whether a review of the diminished impact of the Pioneer Generation Package for low-income elderly pensioners is being undertaken.

Oral Reply by Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security, Minister in charge of the Civil Service and Minister for Home Affairs:

Government pensioners will continue to receive all their post-retirement medical benefits that they are currently getting.

The Pioneer Generation Package (PGP) honours our Pioneer Generation (PG) by taking care of their healthcare needs. Government pensioners who are Pioneers will also enjoy these Pioneer Generation benefits. All Singaporeans who meet the PG criteria, including Government pensioners, will be eligible for lifelong Medisave top-ups, outpatient care subsidies, and MediShield Life premium subsidies under the PGP, regardless of their income.

While Government pensioners continue to enjoy their post-retirement medical benefits under their respective medical schemes, they will still benefit from the PGP. Like other Pioneers, they will receive lifelong annual Medisave top-ups of $200 to $800. In addition, they will enjoy enhanced Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) subsidies at participating General Practitioner and dental clinics. This will reduce their out-of-pocket expenses under their existing medical benefit schemes as pensioners. Pensioners who have moderate to severe functional disabilities will also receive $100 per month under the Pioneer Generation Disability Assistance Scheme.

MediShield Life is a compulsory scheme for all Singaporeans. Hence Government pensioners will also be enrolled in MediShield Life, and be able to enjoy the benefits of MediShield Life that are beyond the current post-retirement medical benefits that Government pensioners receive. Our Government pensioners will each receive a letter from the Public Service Division in October with details on how they are being assisted to enrol in MediShield Life.

Overall, the PGP, together with post-retirement medical benefits of Government pensioners, will ensure that Government pensioners who are Pioneers will be better off than before.
