Passenger on Singapore Airlines flight is presented with $1171.46 bill for Wi-Fi service

A gentleman by the name of Jeremy Gutsche ran up quite a tab on a Singapore Airlines flight from Heathrow Airport in London, to Singapore. Mr. Gutsche was presented with a bill for $1171.46 for his use of Wi-Fi during the flight. And no, watching video was not to blame. Jeremy says that the Wi-Fi service offered by the airline was painfully slow, and couldn't support the use of services like Netflix or YouTube. He claims that he had rung up 155 page views, mostly of his email.

For $28.99, Singapore Airlines will sell its passengers on certain flights, 30MB of data. That buys them 20 social media pages with pictures, 50 web pages, 20 plain emails and 15-minutes of streaming music. But Gutsche says that the service was so slow that it took him one hour to upload a 4MB PowerPoint document. He estimates that this one task probably cost him $100 alone.

Jeremy does admit that he was informed of the cost per MB of going over the 30MB cap, although no warning was sent out to alert him when he approached the 30MB limit. And who can figure out exactly how many MB of data that they have used? While Gutsche has taken to social media to try to get Singapore Airlines to reduce the bill, so far it seems that they won't budge. After all, the airline can point to Gutsche's own words stating that he fell asleep during the flight, while the meter continued to run on his Wi-Fi usage.

Let this be a lesson to those who purchase Wi-Fi data from the airline that they are traveling on. The airlines don't offer Wi-Fi on board just to make passengers happy. It is a profit center for them. If you can go without having connectivity for the duration of your flight, then you should do so. If you must have a connection, try to estimate how much data you've used. When you reach the data cap, switch to Airplane mode.

Mr. Gutsche's luck turned after he disembarked the plane, and checked-in to his hotel. As it turns out, the place where he is staying offers free Wi-Fi to guests.

Didn't know that SIA had become a telco. Not surprised by their tactics of charging hefty bills. Other telcos in Spore have been doing the same.

It is a short term strategy because I doubt that this passenger will want to fly or recommend SIA.

i think this guy is bullshiting,if it takes him one hour to send a 4mb document, how is it possible that he ran out of 30mb so fast?

its obvious he was trying to jack off to porntube at the same time.

and judging by the rates of the wifi plan,1mb=$1?that means he blew thru 1 gig of data?

Do they have a meter for the data used or do u need to estimate it yourself? Phones have apps and their
own services to inform you of your data usage but so far never heard of any app that will warn u using beeps when u going to overshoot its up to you to check it yourself and if you fall asleep or watch long vids while using the data it's your own fault.

anyway the plane is flying in the air right going across regions not stuck in one country and so high up in the air obviously you don't expect the speed to be fast like those on phones or in homes, hotels. It's a no brainer why the speed would be so slow. It's definitely not 3 or 4g cos no teleco signal can be found that high up

Even when business was good they would ding you for excess luggage. I know many business travellers who had to pay up including me:smile: I have flown with other airlines & SIA was the only one who did that to me.

Now that I think about it, it was funny how SIA which is supposed to be a premier airlines was run like a budget airlines:biggrin:

SIA still thinks that it is in a class of its own and that pax are rushing to fly with.

The reality is that people are going to other airlines and SIA is feeling the pain. Yet those scholars running the airline can't see it.

That's why SIA had to end its all biz class flight to US. SQ flights to US are suffering as the other airlines are taking in more pax with better service and pricing. Who is flying SQ nowadays? Only the frogs-in-well type.

taking a long flight, whether it's trans-oceanic or overland, is the best time and opportunity to get away from it all, especially annoying emails and spam as a by-product. i always leave an out-of-office (ooo) message that says..."out of cuntry and email access is extremely limited." best excuse to remain incommunicado for a period of time. of course, every time i go on vacation, some idiots will constantly send me 12 to 16 megabytes of microshitty powerpoint attachments even though they are reminded of my ooo message.

they can always wait until they arrive at the destination. and it will actually be more productive and efficient when big file downloads in seconds using hotel wi-fi than in minutes or hours using immarsat or vsat. only the stupid showoffs will tell everyone on board, especially nubile and impressionable stewardesses, that they have mission-critical, world-important, and galactic-imploding tasks to do with their corporate laptops. it's as though the entire corporation's fate is resting on their antics in air. meanwhile, ceo's and cfo's are quietly and happily sipping champagne in 1st class with all electronic gadgets stashed away.
