I pay no more taxes in NZ than I did in Singapore. My effective tax direct tax rate here is less than 7%.

However, I can only achieve this because I am self employed. If I was a salaried worker, NZ would be the last place on earth I'd want to be earning a living in.

irrelevant,it dont matter if ur a high flyer professional in new zealand earning 200k a year and paying the top tax bracket of 45% or some unemployed "self employed" smuck paying 7% tax feeding pigeons in the park.....at the end of the day 30% of every of ur tax dollar ur hard earned dollar goes to supporting socialist policies.practically 30% of ur country's gdp goes to welfare......how can u stand for that?it must infuriate u.

look at the tax rates of australia omg....

The following rates for 2014-15 apply from 1 July 2014.
Taxable income
Tax on this income
0 – $18,200 Nil
$18,201 – $37,000 -------19c for each $1 over $18,200 thats 19% tax over 18k
$37,001 – $80,000---------- $3,572 plus 32.5c for each $1 over $37,000 thats 32% tax over 37k
$80,001 – $180,000----------- $17,547 plus 37c for each $1 over $80,000 thats 37% tax over 80k
$180,001 and over -------------$54,547 plus 45c for each $1 over $180,000 thats 45% tax over 180k.

The type of immigrants who move to Toronto and Vancouver are different from the ones who move to Calgary and Edmonton. At least that's the sense I get speaking to them. Those who choose Toronto and Vancouver tend to be the complaining type, not willing to adapt, want to turn the place into their ghetto stick to their ways stick with their own people etc. This was also why when my family and I visited Vancouver we absolutely hated it. It was just like Singapore. People were rude. Drivers cutting you left right centre, honk at pedestrians. My daughter even got scolded for walking too slowly in a shopping complex by another chinese person.

I will have to take you up on your offer. I got into the Calgary residency program in 2013. I have another 7 months before I get fully licensed. I never planned to do medicine again coming to Canada. All I did was take the exams and apply. Most International Medical Graduates (IMGs) would do electives, observorships, get Canadian doctors to write letters of reference for them etc. I had none of that and vowed not to waste time doing that. I was perfectly happy in the oil and gas industry. After a year they promoted me to manager and doubled my salary with promise of more to come. Unfortunately, for some reason, somebody pulled out of their residency program spot and I was ranked next on the list after the interview (how I got even that one interview is a mystery to me still). I still dislike medicine though and might eventually go back to my oil and gas job after getting my medical licence but at least it is an option available to me if I need it.

You are indeed a very talented Sinkie or should I say ex-Sinkie.

You made the right choice. Rather stick with the lot of complaining losers back home, you decided to plow your own route to success.

Now you have 'visited' this forum and seen the postings, I bet it doubled conformed to you that the lot of losers here, deserved to be left on the island and get SCREWED!

Foreign domestic helpers allow female to join the work force. They also help to take care of the elderly. Foreign domestic helpers are welcomed because they relieved housewives of mundane chores. On the other hand foreign workers (except those in jobs that Sg don't want) compete with the people for employment, so they are loathed.

Why is FT winning the war for employment? It is due to the change in attitude of the people. To the employer, it is simply - FT are more hardworking and cheaper.

I find it weird because it is the domestic helpers that initiated the decline in the attitude of the people. Husband and wife no longer knows how to do house works. Most even forgotten that it is their duty to teach and guide their children. The kids being trained to bully the maids from birth go on to expect to be paid good without doing much. Then come the economic crisis. We need to sustain the economy with cheap labour to offset the high property cost. The quick fix solution is to bring in the FT. Yes FT helps us to tie over the crisis. However, isn't it our own creation? Why do properties prices have to remain high.? (btw if it collapse Sg is dead). Why do the people's attitudes deteriorated? These are results of wrong policies and there is no turning back. We need another few more generations to correct this wrong.

When Roy asked for donation to fight LHL, loads of $$$ poured in. In a matter of few days.

Roy, you have support. Maybe quiet support.

Great points that you raised. I have told some of my friends and relatives that I believe the root of all the social problems Singapore now faces can be traced back to the domestic maid policy.

Back before there were maids aplenty, mothers and fathers would have to go home to cook dinner, pick the kids up from school or be home when the school bus brought them home. It is the same in other first world countries.

Hence people find it difficult to work long hours late into the night. You would tell your boss, I really have to be home for my children. Employers who were slave drivers and had little concern for work-life balance would be shunned by the workforce. Some women would even not work and stay at home to be with the children. Families were closer as a result, parents taught their kids, instilled values in them and brought them up.

Somewhere along the lines the government cooked up the idea to have domestic maids. Seductive sales pitch which of course made a lot of sense for an emerging country and workforce. Hire cheap foreign domestic maids to take care of the housework and children.

What happened next is a knock on effect. Manager says meeting tonight is 8pm. Worker A says he/she cannot as he/she needs to be home to cook dinner. Manager says why not get a maid? Months pass. Years pass.

Manager says meeting is at 9pm tonight. Worker A says he/she cannot again. Everyone else says ok boss. Everyone around worker A gets promoted. In the end worker A bows down to the new standards and gets a maid.

Why do Singaporeans work such long hours? Because everyone has a maid. It is not as some people suggest, that they need maids because they have to work long hours. Totally opposite.

Which is why I will say again that the day Singapore can emulate Finland, Sweden and Norway is the day most people no longer have maids at home. For this to happen, the Singaporean people have to be bold and start saying they can work without maids. If enough people stand together and say "hey we need to be home for our children for our families" that's when we can see changes for the better. Unfortunately I doubt this would happen. the only way people respond in Singapore is with $$. Price the maid out of reach might be a way but that government will be cursed till kingdom come.

Soon, the growing anti-PAP mood of the younger generations can also be traced back to the maid policy. The PAP kana kabok ...many of its policies are hurting their control of the people and feeding the resentment.

Medicine here is different from that in sinkapore. Family physicians can actually have time to care for their patients. Maybe you will change your mind after practicing a few years as well as build up a good retirement nest egg.

Yeah, I didn't like living in Vancouver as well although it is a very beautiful city. It was Hongcouver and now Chincouver. Toronto is much nicer with its good mix of cultures.

Contrary to your perception, those immigrants who are in Toronto are the ones who embrace Canadianness because they are comfortable in their environment and thus am willing to experience the new culture. Have you caught the anti-Ontario attitude of Alberta already?

I found Alberta to be very much like sinkapore. A dominant party - the conservatives, right-wing politics and red-neck. That was my impression when I was there in the 90s. Met lots of red-necks and decided that Alberta was not my cup of tea. Back then, there were not that many immigrants. With the influx of immigrants, mindset of Alberta has probably changed.

Hope to be able to address you as Dr in a few months' time.

When I was driving around Canada & US I noticed the difference between large cities & smaller ones. I also felt embarrased that I was driving a 10+ year old clunker compared to others who were driving newer Mercedes, beamers,.. You can even feel the different between Calgary & Edmonton.

Many Sporeans who have moved to Edmonton find it difficult to slow down to the pace of life there. However it is easier to slow down & smell the roses, rather than speed up to the hectic life in the cities.

Very well said. Agree with you.

In a sense, Singaporeans deserve to have the PAP ruling them with an iron hand.
