Caucasian bags role as NUS Chinese Studies head

SINGAPORE - A non-Chinese has been appointed as the head of the Department of Chinese Studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS) for the first time.

American Kenneth Dean, who speaks fluent Mandarin and has carried out research here, will take up the post in January.

Professor Dean, 58, plans to introduce courses on Chinese religions and temples, and take students to temples so that they can better understand Singapore's unique Chinese temple culture, Lianhe Wanbao reported yesterday.

He will leave his post of 25 years at Canada's McGill University and join NUS as its first caucasian head of the Department of Chinese Studies.

Singapore is not unfamiliar to Prof Dean. He came here 30 years ago to study Chinese temples. He has also been a visiting professor at NUS in the past four to five years.

Last month, he was here to attend the Taoist Nine Emperor Gods Festival, during which he noted that more young people are getting involved in the festivities.

The son of a United States diplomat, Prof Dean grew up in Taiwan. When he was learning how to speak, the first foreign language he picked up was Hokkien.

His children, who followed him on his field research to places such as Tainan and Xiamen, also learnt to speak Hokkien at a young age.

"In all my life, more than half of my time has been spent in Asia, so coming to Singapore wasn't unexpected. Instead, I feel more comfortable here," said Prof Dean.

In an interview with Lianhe Zaobao last month, he observed that the department's strength lies in its excellent academic tradition and coverage of a wide range of research areas, and said he hopes to build on this strength, as well as boost research in Chinese religions and Singapore culture.

He admitted that being the first caucasian head of the Department of Chinese Studies adds some pressure on him. While his appointment has put him in the limelight, he believes many people will forget about it in time.

"Chinese studies has become a more international field. Many foreigners have had big achievements in the past, so it's a field that's not limited by boundaries," he said.

The university's support, stable research funding and Singapore's diverse cultures are some of the factors that attracted Prof Dean to Singapore.

When he steps up next year as head, he will teach about Chinese religions and local temples.

"I'll teach the students how to read tablet inscriptions and interview temple management staff, so that they can understand the temple community, culture and its religious functions, as well as help them to understand that the diversity of their culture is a meaningful one," he said.

Beyond his academic work, he is a great admirer of many Singaporeans' steadfast devotion to keeping the Chinese temple culture alive, noting that many temples here have to relocate after their land lease expires - a process that can be costly.

"I'm very moved. Their spirit is admirable. It's amazing that they're willing to put in so much hard work to preserve tradition," he said.

"Singapore's story isn't just about its modernisation. It's also about the preservation of the Chinese temple culture."

It's ironic. You'll never see this happen in Taiwan, PRC, HK or even Malaysia. Slap in the face for our half-baked language education and policy.

In the '50s and '60s we had the highest proportion of students studying 文言文, even higher than Taiwan. It was compulsory for all Chinese-ed students up to HSC. But old fart single-handedly decimated Chinese stream education and Nantah for political, not linguistic, reasons.

So we end up with two generations of cultural orphans who are neither proficient in English or their mother tongue. Folks who can't string a proper sentence together without mixing in some Singlish, Mandarin and even Melayu words.

We were not Chinese speakers anyway, more like dialect speakers.

So? The Taiwanese are Minnan speakers, the Hong Kongers are Cantonese speakers, that didn't stop them from attaining a high level of Chinese proficiency, both in schools and academia.

文言文 is Chinese Literary. no matter what dialect a Chinese speak, the basic Chinese script is still 漢文.

Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew, etc. predate Mandarin and cannot be called dialects of Mandarin. They are Chinese languages in their own right, and not variations of Mandarin.

It is a little surprising that a non-Chinese has been appointed to head the Chinese Studies Department but such appointments have precedence. For a long time, for instance, the Malay Studies Department in the same university was headed by Prof Tham Seong Chee, and the English Department was headed by Assoc Prof Ban Kah Choon, and before him, Edwin Thumboo.

We were not Chinese speakers anyway, more like dialect speakers.

it's ironic that a japanese woman who spent some time in sg knows more about chinese clan associations in sg than the average sinkie. while in sg, she took the effort to learn and do research about clan associations and how they evolved and survived over a hundred years. she is as good if not better than what this site can offer in terms of clan association knowledge.

Mandarin is a Chinese dialect, spoken mainly in the north, north-east and Yunnan. It is generally considered a more recent dialect than Hokkien, Cantonese and Teochew, though there are some linguistic features in it that are closer to Middle Chinese than the southern Chinese dialects.

If you want to witness the embodiment of the spirit of overseas Chinese, look no further than Nantah.

That's our biggest differentiator between us and the Mainlanders.

Instead NUS focuses on temples ... and this implies other crass superstitious practices like hungry ghost festival, tuapehkong worship, spiritual mediums...

Well done Pap... We have officially become cultureless peasants

Mandarin was voted to be the Chinese common language (putonghua) shortly after the republic was established. It was a close fight between Mandarin and Sichuan hua that went down to the difference one single vote.

Imagine if someone in the council voted differently, we would all be speaking sichuan hua now

do you know that if your family genealogy or lineage is recorded with the clan, you can browse through the book and look for all your great grand aunties and uncles and your cousins several generations in the past and present? do you know that your middle name, if your parents were to decide to follow tradition, is also in the records before you are born. it was the most well kept family registry before ancestry.com was founded. :p

I can understand when a non chinese is appointed and I have no issues with that. But this angmor kui is from where? He knows Singapore? He knows 南洋华侨 culture? And yes. our Chinese heritage is an off-shoot of and therefore unique from mainland China's.

I bet none of you has ever studied at NUS or taken a module in the Department of Chinese Studies.

It has nothing to do with the Chinese language. The study of languages belong to the Centre for Language Studies, another department.

Chinese Studies is about social sciences regarding China: history, literature, politics, culture etc.

If this ang moh has real talent, let him take up the job.

What I can't stand are those third-rate fraudulent 'talents' from third world countries stealing a living in Sinkieland, only because they're only too happy to take up a shitty salary and the pro-business PAP govt/cronies indulge them.

For an angmo who has a stronger interest in our temples than our very own young people who are more interested in singing songs and playing guitars in the churches, this angmo is more "Chinese" than them already.
