CHAN CHUN SING: WE SHOULD BE LOOKING AT ISSUES WHICH WILL AFFECT SINGAPORE IN 2065
Post date:
2 Nov 2014 - 4:59pm

Minister for Social and Family Development, Chan Chun Sing, explained during a community visit that Singaporeans should also be conscious of issues which may affect Singapore as far ahead as 2065 and beyond.

He spoke about how Singapore is celebrating SG50 next year but especially for young Singaporeans, they should be aware of and be able to think about world developments which may impact Singapore in another 50 years’ time.

Minister Chan was speaking in front of over 160 students from secondary school to university in Woodlands and he urged them to adopt the “4 As”: awareness, analysis, application and alternatives.

He said that young Singaporeans should not be “a frog in a well” and they should always be aware of developments around the world.

Some students gave examples of the melting ice caps and the Ebola crisis and Minister Chan added other issues like global economic crisis and how these issues can affect Singapore.

Mr Chan said that Singaporeans must be able to analyse these issues, be able to apply lessons from them to Singapore and also be able to think of alternatives which may improve Singapore’s resilience to such global changes.

"Never keep our eyes off the ball of what is happening elsewhere which may impact us," he said.

Minister Chan said that students must take charge of their own futures to ensure that Singapore can still be successful 50 years on.

""Never keep our eyes off the ball of what is happening elsewhere which may impact us," he said."

Talk about mixed metaphors. This is truly scrambled. Let me help our millionaire minister.

" Never keep our eyes off ..." should be "Never take your eyes off..." or " Always keep your eyes on...." . But wait...this is no ordinary ball.....This is the ball of "happening" ......so keep your eye on the balls in play everywhere....Do not just carry any ball.....watch for happening balls.
Having said that , I quite like Kee Chiu. He is kind of a verbal klutz like Woodie but he is quite likeable and seemingly unspoiled unlike so many papists.

PS. keep one's eye on the ball simply meant "focus" and be alert. Now I don't know. Sounds like a Mee Siam Mai Hum moment.

It is precisely because I thought about issues 50 years from now that made me conclude the best course of action was to get out of Singapore while I could.

As the years go by, if Singapore continues to prosper, property prices and the price of space and land will continue to rise. Singapore will attract more people to her shores as immigrants. Singapore will become an even more crowded place than it is now. There will be underground complexes. Cars will be super luxury items but public transport will be everywhere. Competition among people will be very stiff. Children will be more and more stressed to produce academic results.

If that lifestyle appeals to you, by all means.

On the other hand, if Singapore's property prices started to fall as the years go by (and yet Singapore did not go to war to increase her land size) and cars became cheaper and fewer on the road, less crowding and empty buildings.....geez I shudder to think what had happened to cause that.

It's a no win situation as I see it.

As someone has said, when you are not in the Position , you don't worry about the job. 50 years later, what can do you ? The Past annoited leaders even didn't forecast there is 5.2 million population in year 2014.

It is obvious that the leadership knows that he cannot take over the Tg Pagar torch, and so move him to Wooodlands/Sembawang GRC.

As usual, these expensive ministers like to take on only school kids - and not daring to have an open dialogue with anyone near their age.

What do you think?
