The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is taking part in a bilateral training exercise with the Chinese Communist Party’s People's Liberation Army (PLA) from 2 to 9 November 2014 in Nanjing, China.
“Brigadier-General Siew Kum Wong, Assistant Chief of General Staff (Operations), and Major-General Wang Chunning, Commander of 12th Mixed Group Army, Nanjing Military Region co-officiated at the opening ceremony this morning,” MINDEF said in a media release.
The eight-day exercise will involve “about 70 personnel each from the SAF and the PLA” and “professional seminars and a Company-level conventional infantry exercise featuring a live-firing demonstration”.
“The SAF is represented by personnel from the 5th Singapore Infantry Regiment and 3rd Singapore Division. They will participate in the exercise alongside their Chinese counterparts from the PLA 179th Brigade and Nanjing Military Region.”
COOPERATION 2014 is the third bilateral exercise between the SAF and PLA.
However, the Singapore's government cooperation with the Chinese communist government is at odds with its claims last month.
Earlier last month, the Singapore government banned the film, ‘To Singapore with Love’ on the pretext of communist insurgency.
“Communist hit squads assassinated Singaporeans in broad daylight,” the Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim said.
“The film “To Singapore, With Love” contains untruths and deception about this history. Therefore it received an appropriate classification which disallowed it for public viewing,” he added.
“It gives a misleading account of these individuals’ past, and makes no attempt to present an objective account of the violent Communist insurrection that they had participated in and have not renounced.”
“It would also be a gross injustice to the men and women who braved violence and intimidation to stand up to the Communists, especially those who lost their lives in the fight to preserve Singapore’s security and stability, and secure a democratic, non-Communist Singapore,” Mr Yaacob also said.
Mr Yaacob also said that, “The CPM also used Communist United Front tactics to infiltrate and take control of open organisations like student bodies, labour unions, political parties and cultural organisations.”

In his National Day Rally this year, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong also thanked the first Organising Secretaries in the People’s Association for being “the frontline soldiers in the battle against communists and helped the Government to win the people’s support.”
However, in publicly-released records in the British archives, Maurice LB Williams, the Security Liaison Officer (who headed the Singapore British intelligence MI5 branch), had said in 1962, that, “In spite of intensive investigations, no evidence has been obtained of CPM directions to open United Front workers as to how they should carry out their activities.”
“At present they are united only in their dissatisfactions with the PAP Government, and they cannot be considered to form a monolithic Communist edifice under strict Party management.”
It is thus clear that there was no “communist insurgency” in Singapore, as the PAP government has continuously claimed.
Not only are such claims not historically backed up, but the PAP government’s own engagement with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is contrary to its own claims against communist beliefs.
The PAP government’s cooperation with the CCP thus either poses a threat to Singapore or its claims of communist insurgency is thus a ploy to quell the “dissatisfactions with the PAP Government”, which they had so feared.
Is a film about ex communists more of a "threat to national security" than a joint military operation with China's communist army?

Isn't 5SIR the most 'classified' infantry regiment of the SAF, and that's why its camp is just next to the Mindef Gombak compound?
What is 5SIR so classified? Republican guards to protect the PAP?

It a combined arms army corp, while the 12th army group is only a "B"graded formation, some of subordinate units took part in the suppression of the Tiananmen Protest. the 179th Brigade is a motorized rifle brigade.
while the PRC commander is a MG, but under PLA, MG only 1 star, so he sama sama rank with the SAF commander.
as for only 70 men involve in the excerise, so only a reinforced platoon went to Nanjing. the rest must be field grade occifers doing sandtable masak masak with their PLA counterparts then at night experience the rape of Nanjing.
If the total number from the SAF is 70, then your term "reinforced platoon" appears realistic because:
there may be a few senior officers;
the OC and the platoon commander;
one platoon, which may include a few elements of the infantry support (say a team of GPMG, a team of the old days 84mm RR, a team of infantry mortar)

Mindef Gombak Base has the 1SIG Battalion, which also is more classified than other signal units.
I think they have knowledge of and access to various Mindef secrets... possibly secret tunnels.

U mean at night the SAF 5 SIR guys got raped in Nanjing?
179th Brigade is not a motorized rifle brigade. Its an infantry brigade under the 12th Army Group. In this army group, there is a 34th Motorized infantry brigade and a 36th Motorized infantry division. Hence 179th is strictly an infantry brigade. The 179th is the "show" unit for the PLA. All foreign visiting military dignitaries are sheperded to visit the 179th as an example of a PLA unit. So, I am guessing the personnel are hand picked.
the 70 personnel also include 3 Div personnel.
48 is pure tanks, Leo 2s.
Depending on the terrain, the Leo will pick off their best tank, the Type 99 long before they can get in range with their own gun.

According to the Chinese version of wiki, 179th Brigade consist of 01X battalion of Type 96(51 tanks) and 04X battalions of Armoured Infantry ZBD86步兵战车.(124 ifv) there also a regiment of artillery within the brigade's ToE, consisting of 03Xbatteries. One each of 152mm howitzer, 122mm self propelled gun and one AA battery.
The ZBD86 is the Chinese copy of the BMP-1 and the Type 96 is similar to the T72, so with so much armour, called 179th motorized rifle brigade justify its strength.
