Security tokens not packed in open: DBS

A member of the public sent in a photo of what appeared to be DBS security tokens being packed at a void deck, but DBS says the boxes photographed are empty and that it has a stringent process for handling tokens.

A concerned member of the public sent Channel NewsAsia this photo, taken Thursday (Oct 30), of a group of women packing what appeared to be DBS security tokens.

<!-- /tab-gallery-area --> SINGAPORE: The sight of what appeared to be DBS Bank security tokens being packed at a void deck at Block 349, Ubi Ave 1 raised eyebrows on Thursday (Oct 30). One member of the public was so concerned, he sent a photograph of the scene to Channel NewsAsia.

The person, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he saw "a bunch of aunties" packing the devices. He noted they were casually dressed and that there was visible security presence.

“Shouldn’t security tokens be handled with more care? Should they be packed in a public area, without access control?” he wrote.

In response to queries on the photo, DBS said the boxes being packed were actually empty. "We do have a stringent process when packing the actual tokens and they are handled securely," said a DBS spokesperson said.
DBS security tokens are used for authentication procedures for online transactions. To prevent fraud, the bank generates a one-time password for customers and transmits this via the device, before they can log their iBanking accounts. :kma:

Even if the boxes are empty, it is still very slacking of security. The security token and its packaging must be packed and handled within security access control premise, and not at a void deck with all the aunties facing away from the boxes.

If this is allowed, then ballot boxes can also be handled without security, because they're empty.

You see here is the problem with things in singapore.

Yes they fuck up. You know the govt, big corporations, businesses etc but at the end of day so what? They won't be held accountable. You all know it.

Let's just assume someone steals those security tokens. From what i know you need to register the token first with the bank account before it can be used to access the bank account.

token codes are only required when you log into your account to see past transactions and not just the account balance or when you want to transfer money to another bank account by logging into the account first. If you make credit card payments they will send you a code via sms to a phone number you have registered with that bank account. The point is you need the account holder's username and password too if you want to make illegal transfers of money from his account to yours.

Anyway back to the issue let's assume someone actually manages to illegally steal a sum of money from peoples' bank accounts because he managed to obtain those tokens. Will DBS be taken to task and be forced to reimburse those cheated?

The likelihood of DBS doing that is the likelihood of seeing a pink flying elephant zoom past your window.

It's really as simple as that. DBS or any major govt corporation fucks up nothing happens to them. Period.

If the token boxes were empty, why were they neatly stacked inside the cardboard box? You think we're born yesterday?

This is DBS, the bank that threw away safety deposit boxes that still had people valuables inside:biggrin:

I'm sure that it was an honest mistake but if no one was held responsible & punished a culture of carelessness will persist.
