Tourist kneels and begs tearfully for refund at Sim Lim Square shop
Stomp*|*Tue, Nov 04, 2014
SINGAPORE - A Vietnamese tourist was left in tears after a nightmarish ordeal buying an iPhone 6 for his girlfriend at Mobile Air, a shop in Sim Lim Square.

Mobile Air made headlines recently for refunding a woman $1,010 in coins, including one-cents and five-cents coins.

According to a report in Lianhe Zaobao, the Vietnamese tourist was on holiday with his girlfriend in Singapore and, after some research, he found out that there was ready stock of the phone in Sim Lim Square.

The man is reportedly a factory worker with a monthly income of $200 and took months to save up for the phone, which he hopes to give to his girlfriend as a birthday present.

The report stated that he was quoted $950 for the phone at Mobile Air and that he excitedly made payment in cash.

Thinking that it was safe to shop in Singapore, he did not scrutinise the documents closely. He was also not fluent in English.

When he wanted to leave the shop with the phone, staff members from Mobile Air asked if he wanted a warranty package for one or two years. He decided to take the one-year package, thinking that it was complimentary.

To his surprise, he was asked to fork out another $1,500 for the warranty package.

He was told that if he did not pay up, he would not be allowed to leave with the phone.

Not knowing what to do, he knelt down and tearfully begged for a refund.

He said staff members at Mobile Air laughed at him, and that no passers-by were willing to help him.

Mobile Air subsequently agreed to refund him $600, but his girlfriend refused to leave the shop $350 poorer. Staff members at the shop also told her that they will retract their offer of refunding $600 if she called the police.

The girlfriend decided to call the police in the end.

When the police arrived, Mobile Air showed them the signed invoice and offered to refund the couple $70.

Officers from the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) were called in subsequently and the couple got back a refund of $400.

The tourist said he accepted the $400 refund because he had to return to Vietnam in two days and he was not sure if Case could help him get back a full refund

This is daylight robbery and with so blatantly.
I'm tempted to go and buy a phone from them just to test water.

According to a report on Lianhe Zaobao, the errant retailer at Sim Lim Square which recently made the news for refunding a woman $1010 in coins, had gotten into another dispute with a Vietnamese tourist.

(See also: Mobile Air at Sim Lim Gave Woman $1010 in Coins When She Asked for Refund)

MobileAir staff had reportedly laughed at the man, Mr Bành who had gotten down onto his knees to beg the shop for a refund of his money after they tried to charge him $1,500 for a warranty,

Mr Bành was visiting Singapore and he wanted to buy an iPhone 6 for his girlfriend’s birthday.

MobileAir had quoted him $950 for the phone and he had signed the invoice without reading it believing Singapore to be a safe place to shop. However, the shop later then asked for $1500 for the warranty which he had believed would be complimentary.

The shop then refused to let Mr Bành leave without paying.

Mr Bành is a factory worker who only makes $200 a month and he had saved for several months in order to buy his girlfriend the phone.

When the shop refused to give him a refund, he got down onto his knees and begged while crying. All the while, the shop keeper simply laughed at the poor man.

After a long stand-off, MobileAir agreed to refund him $600 of the $950 he paid for the phone meaning he would have paid $350 for nothing.

However, Mr Bành’s girlfriend refused to leave without justice.

MobileAir told the couple that they would not get any refund if they called the police but the Vietnamese pair called police anyway.

<ins id="aswift_1_expand" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: currentColor; width: 336px; height: 280px; display: inline-table; visibility: visible; position: relative; background-color: transparent; border-image: none;"><ins id="aswift_1_anchor" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: currentColor; width: 336px; height: 280px; display: block; visibility: visible; position: relative; background-color: transparent; border-image: none;"><iframe name="aswift_1" width="336" height="280" id="aswift_1" frameBorder="0" marginWidth="0" marginHeight="0" scrolling="no" vspace="0" hspace="0" allowfullscreen="true" style="left: 0px; top: 0px; position: absolute;" allowTransparency="true"></iframe></ins></ins>

After that, MobileAir only wanted to give them a $70 refund.

When the couple resorted to calling CASE, MobileAir agreed to give them $400 of the $950 back.

Mr Bành finally agreed on the $400 as he was just a tourist and he would need to return home in two days so he couldn’t follow through the full procedures with CASE anyway.

MobileAir is the worst shop in Sim Lim Square that has the most number of complaints with CASE regarding mobile phone purchases.

The shop, located at #01-41 has 11 complains in just 3 months.

Too lame. To teach these bengs a lesson, lob a grenade into their shop. BOOM.

Once everyone has witnessed the destruction and carnage, their fellow beng shops on the lower levels of SLS will wisen up.

Don't count on CASE or the poodles to do anything. If they really wanted to, they would have done something long ago.

A swindler was once asked by the police, 'how can you cheat people who trusted you?'

The swindler replied, 'how can I cheat people who didn't?'

I won't judge him so soon. Being cheated of your money in a foreign land can't be fun.

On the other hand, the show ain't over yet, and who knows what may happen to Jover in the coming days.
