Suffering the Children ... protecting them from harm or harming them?

Against the political backdrop of an authoritarian regime that has been entrenched as the government of the day for the longest time, nothing can be more dangerous than for the citizen to relinquish all sense of individual responsibility and the responsibility of a citizen towards his neighbour - leaving their lives in the hands of such a regime to decide and dictate their fate - mostly at will.

How often have we come across comments like "we have peace, people are still generally better off than our neighbours, our children are safe here, we are better educated than our parents, we are richer, we can afford to travel, we have good food on the table and a shelter over our heads, there are no slumps, the government give is handouts during economic hard times ..." etc etc.

And because of one or some of the reasons above, we are reluctant to rock the boat, even though the boat is beginning to grow barnacles in the hull for lack of maintenance.
To cover up our cowardice , we hide behind common excuses like ... "for the sake of our children and their future"; - refusing to look around us, or listen closely to the lamentations of our suffering neighbours, and keeping dumb when we should speak up. We do this thinking the future will surely ironed itself out without our involvements. Yah. Sure. Where in history has passive non-action brought about changes for the better?

Admittedly, I have not followed very closely the events happening in Hong Kong. But there was one phrase which I happened to come across which was recited by one of the key members - "Short term pain for long term gain". It is a powerful statement If you think hard about it.

Silly folks would see the economic and societal standstill as a detriment to the country. "Irresponsible protesters who only think for themselves and trying to get what they want with disregard for their countrymen" - that is the tune currently being sung as more and more people begin to believe they are losing the battle against the authorities. They now prefer the return to routine as the protest and stalemate grow from days to weeks and weeks to months.

Why is this so? Simple. It's because they never understood the long term gains to begin with. Why do some global states fight for independence; some long drawn ones with countless fatalities and sacrifices? Yes, they recognised the long term goals - which are mostly leaned toward a better life for the individual, for the community, and for the country.

It is therefore very sad to hear people who claim to be advocating and supporting the causes of democracy now ridiculing the protesters in Hong Kong. Worse still are those who try to draw parallel lines to an imaginary force behaving in the same manner in Singapore - when there are none.

The opposition forces in Singapore and their supporters have so far gone about blowing their horns in legalised forums and platforms. Yet; even as these platforms are taken away from them, they still abide by these very unfair and protagonistic rules of law.

We should learn to appreciate the passion, the dedication and the unwavering spirits of these brave and patriotic characters; our fellow Singaporeans who make themselves stand in the line of fire for our sake and our children's sakes.

This is not a lesson to shield or children from - to unfairly deprived them off this invaluable lesson of looking after the greater good of our country; our fellow countrymen and women, and most of all, their rights to be free from oppression.

Do not let a comfortable life bring about a false sense of security. It will be too late when the winds of change pay a visit.

Very true indeed!!
To stand idly by and think that "as long as it doesn't affect me, it's ok" is the worst kind of mentality of all.
For when it DOES affect you.. it might be too late for YOU to do anything.
We MUST not be cajoled into complacency and think that "better not to rock the boat".. we must first learn to float on our own.. and not depend on the boat that "envlaves" us.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

The pappies are nothing but a bunch of kleptocrats: politicians by profession, thieves by nature.

Kleptocracy... is a form of political and government corruption where the government exists to increase the personal wealth and political power of its officials and the ruling class at the expense of the wider population, often with pretense of honest service.

This type of government is generally considered corrupt, and the mechanism of action is often embezzlement of state funds.

I am sure MIW must be looking at how things turn out in HK nervously. Rules like gerrrymeandering, PA grassroots in Opp wards, using public resources favoriting PAP or denying Opp wards r things that people will protest in the streets if they r not careful!
