<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->A 14-YEAR-OLD girl was yesterday given a dressing down by a Juvenile Court judge for being part of a gang that subjected her good friend to sexual abuse as well as a vicious attack last June.
The girl, a juvenile, was told off by District Judge Wong Li Tein, who said her involvement was the worst - considering that the victim of the assault, then 13, had stayed at her home the night before.
The pair were so close that the younger girl called her 'mummy'.
Neither can be named to protect their identities.
On June 28 last year, the older girl was part of a group who watched the victim as she was almost raped by a man and then forced to perform oral sex on him.
Yesterday, the girl was sent to the Singapore Girls' Home for a month, followed by 24 months' probation, including a 12-month stay at Gracehaven, a children's home.
Four other members of the group, aged between 12 and 15, were also sent to homes.
The parents of these juveniles were all made to pay between $100 and $300 to cover the victim's medical bill.
The instigator of the attack, Nor Azura Omar, 16, was sentenced to reformative training last week.
Angry at the victim for bad-mouthing her, she schemed to get back at the 13-year-old by arranging for a man to rape her.
When the man failed to do so at a staircase landing of a block of flats that day, Nor Azura forced the victim to perform oral sex on him, and also kicked and slapped the victim.
At this point, the 14-year-old and the others who were standing by joined in. The assault, which was then suspended because someone was approaching the staircase landing, continued in two multi-storey carparks in the area.
To the 14-year-old, Judge Wong said yesterday that it was 'bad enough' that she had stood by during the attack, but she also assaulted the victim:
'What kind of friend are you? How can you bear to do something like that to a good friend who stayed in your house the night before?' ELENA CHONG & CAROLYN QUEK
