The most coveted industry is finance.

In spite of the tight labor market, only 15% of students and early professionals with less than a year of experience believe that it will take them less than one month to land their first job, a survey by LinkedIn revealed today.

In contrast, professionals with at least 15 years of experience said that their first jobs were fairly easy to land and more than double (31%) found a job within a month of leaving university.

When students and early professionals were asked about their dream industries, Finance took the top spot (15%), followed by Sales, Media & Marketing (10%), while Professional Services and Travel & Transport, tied at the third place at 9%. However, 53% of all professionals consider that they have not ended up in their dream industry.Students and early professionals in Singapore were among the most ambitious amongst the countries with the majority (32%) of the view that they should be in a current position for two years before getting promoted, compared to 23% in Hong Kong and 22% in Australia.

However, students and early professionals in India displayed the most mettle, with 27% saying that they should be promoted within a year. The clear ambition of Singaporean students and early professionals is also demonstrated as their careers take centrestage after finishing their education: three-quarters (76%) wanted work experience, 71% would get a job, and 40% would get an internship.

Further, the same group also said that networking face-to-face (35%), taking a break from studying (29%), and showcasing their university work (25%) were other important things to do after getting their degree.
According to students and early professionals in Singapore, the top three attributes of a dream job are happiness at work (58%), money (49%) and good working relationships with their colleagues (44%). Surprisingly, job titles, the ability to work from home and the credibility of the company were towards the lower rung of the ladder.

The local university rankings are high so that they can be marketed in brochures to prospective foreign students.

Tertiary education, like other things such as healthcare and transport, has been reduced to a racket for monetization.

NUS still sends me copies of AlumNUS magazines... their content is not too different from Petir magazines.

You see nowadays many young man and woman selling insurance, investment and other products at bus interchange. They are all native Sinkes not FT. Many are fresh uni graduates awaiting to land their first full time jobs. Really hope that the wait is not that long.

Perhaps this is why the pappies suddenly unanimously played down the importance of having a degree, with conveniently selected case studies (hi there, Keppel FELS employees) to prove their point.

Who do you think is more angry? A grad with poor career prospects or a non-grad with poor career prospects? Which do you think has more severe political repercussions?

I suspect the pappies have already perceived that they can no longer keep up with the condescending 'you must be more productive and constantly upgrade your skills' charade any longer, because the root cause of the matter is how the economy has been designed.

They don't even pretend anymore. At least last time, they bragged about how life sciences would be the 'next big thing', psychoing unassuming youngsters to sign up for the relevant courses.

Re: Over 8 in 10 singaporean fresh grads have difficulty landing their first job: Sur

the way i see it, the typical shell life of a graduate in sinkieland is that after probably working for 20 years, when you reached 40's or 50's, you get retrenched and drive a taxi. there are many in this predicament. the more i think sinkieland is unsustainable. but we dun have a choice, we depends on foreign investment, so the more that we are oppressed in a way that we can't raise our voice when the time comes. the recent trend is that govt seemingly encourage young start-ups rather than looking for a job. perhaps, they know chances of these young grads getting a job is diminishing.

Making some moves to do that but other countries are not as open as sinkieland.

Not as open, chances are the government cares or at least value/protect citizens.

Foreigners' interests must be protected too. That was what the Prince recently got his former regent to convey to the public. You cannot be chasing away the strays nibbling away at some of the juicy, plum roles found in Singapore. Why, you should thank the PAP for it, for giving you the privilege of watching them eat and have a good time!
