Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou's Nov. 8 performance will be moved to a week after the conclusion of the Nov. 22–Dec.20 Southeast Asian football championships amid fears that covering the pitch for the concert would kill the grass.

"As we now begin to look forward to the AFF Suzuki Cup next month, we have had to make some difficult decisions to ensure this regional competition has the best chance for success with regards to the quality of the National Stadium pitch," Sports Hub chief operating officer Oon Jin Teik said in a statement.

Tournament organisers, the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF), said they would decide on Wednesday whether or not to move the eight-team tournament, to be co-hosted with Vietnam, or switch venues to Singapore's much smaller 5,000 seat Jalan Besar stadium on an artificial pitch.

The National Stadium surface was heavily criticised again this week as Brazil beat Japan 4-0 in a friendly on Tuesday on a surface the Singapore Football Association deemed far short of international standards.

The AFF want the stadium -- the centrepiece of a $1 billion Sports Hub also featuring an aquatics centre and indoor stadium -- to be empty for a minimum of 15 working days prior to their event.

That puts into doubt the New Zealand Maori's non-cap rugby match against the invitational Asia Pacific Dragons in Singapore on Nov. 15.

A second concert featuring Grammy award winning artist Mariah Carey will go ahead on Friday but with a rearranged stage and set up to better protect the sandy pitch, made of natural grass reinforced with artificial fibre inserts.

The pitch only had two weeks to bed in May as appose to the normal six-month period leaving it struggling to cope with the number of events and constant covering for concerts and amateur runs. Many are unhappy with the poor spectacle which threatens to hinder Singapore's bid to become a sporting capital.

Sport Singapore, a statutory board of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, threatened to withhold funds for Sports Hub if the pitch problems continued to embarrass.

"We cannot be paying for what has not been delivered," it said shortly after Tuesday's fulltime whistle.

What is new is that this fuck up is on the world stage for all the world to see. The PAP cannot spin it to gullible 60% who swallow everything. When Brazil and Japan plays football there, its televised world wide. Millions of fans can see the poor condition of the field and yet during the broadcast, it would be mentioned that this is a brand new stadium.

I think the upcoming Project Jewel at Changi Airport will also be the same: overpriced, an eyesore, things not working properly.

Quite an accurate reflection of the country's condition, to be honest. Nobody cares about excellence and high standards anymore; everyone wants to cut costs so a little more money flows back into their pockets.

NParks scholars have absolutely NO IDEA how to sow or maintain a lawn because most Singaporeans grew up in HDB concrete jungles and those that live in small terrace houses saw their parents tiled up their gardens with ceramic tiles/pavers to save the trouble of mowing the lawn periodically.

they could've got some low-tech farmers instead of these high tech scholars and tended to the field from day one.....
the grass would've settled after all those years and been so luscious that even an ah tiongbu would've be envious

whatever. There are so many golf courses in singapore as well as the Turf Club. All of them have grass contractors and maintenance companies. There is definitely grass expertise here and how to maintain greens and links. When they build this white elephant National Stadium, it was not sexy to hire locals for the grass. Must be some high class angmo tuakee who can recommend some exotic blend of turf that has never been used this near the equator. Otherwise, how can they justify flying to Europe and North America to "check out all the potential grass companies" and get free taxpayer holiday at the same time? Right now, they will give their right balls to have the same type of grass on any fairway on any golf course in singapore in their field. But fairway grass put in by local company and maintain by apuneh FT contractors is not expensive enough for them mah.

really KNN....just grow grasses on a football pitch...so difficult meh

still can remember during my pri 6 science class; ask to bring some red/green beans from home
...placed them in a glass jar with some wet cotton...left them on the window self and within a few days ...

Growing grass in this lush environment when u have sunshine all year round and rain water is not an issue. If you want to grow grass in Norway or Colder parts of Canada that's another issue. There is so many golf course here, any of them will have groundskeepers that can tell them how to do it.
