An Investor attitude survey by Friends Provident International (FPI) found that most (61%) Singaporeans who have lived overseas don’t want to retire in Singapore.

The survey took responses from over 1000 people from both Hong Kong and Singapore who have lived or worked in another country for at least 6 months before.

When asked about where the respondents would want to retire, only 39% said they’d want to retire in their home countries. 37% said that they would want to retire in the countries that they lived in abroad. Another 13% said they’d want to retire in some other country and 12% were undecided.
The main reasons that respondents gave for wanting to retire elsewhere were to chase a better quality of life or lower cost of living.

Popular retirement options for Singaporeans were Australia and Malaysia. For Hong Kongers, many said they’d want to retire in Singapore.

The survey also found that in general, people who have lived abroad before have wider views on investment and are more likely to invest abroad in things like property, bonds, currency and shares.

FPI explained that working abroad can expose investors to more opportunities and encourages them to think outside of their local market.

u must be part of the 39%.

sg is a great place for time-off or as an alternate "short-term" retirement spot. if one can afford it, there's no need to permanently retire in one location. i can alternate between 2 locations depending on the season, very similar to migrating birds. in spring and summer, i will hang around the bay area, and in fall and winter, you can find me around bedok reservoir. :p

I would love to retire in Singapore if I could indulge in my fly fishing.

Why should anyone want to retire in Singapore? Congested roads, sky high prices everywhere, lousy entertainment. There's no art, no culture, no fun. Just a hodgepodge of eating places, shopping galleries, a couple of golf courses and that's about it. No scenic spots, no fun getaways, no real places to chill and hang out except the discotheques and pubs which are boring and lackadaisical by any standard.

My mother's friend has been doing that. Half year in Australia, half year in Spore. But a few months ago, her husband got a stroke while in Spore, and in coma till now. Heard that medical bill is quite high. So must be prepared to pay for medical emergency for such a living arrangement.

When you retire, you want to be in a place that's not overcrowded and where the pace of life is slower.

Hence, Sinkieland is not the place.

Unless your idea of a wonderful retirement life is marathon karaoke sessions at home or at some RC office.

I am overseas because I wanted to get away from the haze. It will be hard to return to Spore because living overseas has many advantages.

With the haze a reality I expect spending more time outside Spore.

I think there are people who are doing this in Peesai and fly fish for Peacock Bass (an introduced species) and snakehead. You should come back and promote this, most anglers here use live baits and litter the shores where they fish, Singapore needs more civic conscious anglers.

Cheers!

I would love to retire in Singapore if I could indulge in my fly fishing.
