A hotline number to Singapore telecommunication company M1 was reportedly re-routed to the Singapore Police Force's emergency number on Friday afternoon.

Channel NewsAsia reported that when they tried calling 1627 - the hotline number for M1 - around 2.15pm, a voice recording said they had reached the 999 police emergency line.

The Straits Times reported that several readers had informed them of the same encounter.

A statement on the M1 website said: "Some calls to our hotline earlier today were inadvertently diverted to 999. The issue has since been rectified. Please reset your handset. We apologise for the inconvenience caused."

SINGAPORE — Telecommunications company M1 yesterday said it expected to see moderate growth this year after posting a 12.7 per cent rise in net profit for the third quarter.

Net profit for the three months ended last month rose to S$44.5 million from S$39.5 million in the same period last year, M1 said after markets closed.

Revenue edged up 3.5 per cent to S$250.2 million, with income from fixed services and mobile telecommunications offsetting a 23.5 per cent plunge in international call services.

Handset sales rose 20.6 per cent to S$43.3 million during the period.

However, the telco once again saw its mobile customer base narrow: As of the end of last month, M1 had 1.9 million mobile customers, 10.8 per cent lower than last year’s 2.1 million. Its market share also slipped to 23.9 per cent as of the end of July, from 24.1 per cent in the second quarter.

The post-paid customer base grew 1.9 per cent year-on-year, while the prepaid customer base decreased 25 per cent due to regulatory changes that took effect in April, reducing the number of prepaid SIM cards per subscriber from 10 to three.

Looking forward, M1 chief executive Karen Kooi said: “In September, we introduced new 4G smartphone plans to offer customers a wider choice and larger data bundles, which will better meet their data usage requirements. We are also on track to complete the upgrade of our 4G network to LTE-Advanced nationwide, which can offer higher throughput speeds of up to 300Mbps, by end of the year.”

SINGAPORE - The current Deputy Commissioner of Investigations and Intelligence, Mr Hoong Wee Teck, 51, will be appointed Commissioner of Police on Jan 6 next year.

He replaces current Police Commissioner Ng Joo Hee, 48,who will be appointed chief executive of the Public Utilities Board.

Mr Ng will also assume a concurrent appointment as Deputy Secretary (Special Duties), Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources from Jan 6 next year.

In a statement, Mr Ng said he signed on as a police officer 29 years ago mainly to get a scholarship to study at Oxford University.

" It was never my youthful ambition to become a cop," he said. "But I turned out to be a fairly decent policeman and am tremendously privileged and honoured to have been the police commissioner these past five years."

Mr Ng added that his "only motivation for coming to work every morning is the grave responsibility" he has for the 12,000 officers in the police force, and the mission of safeguarding public safety in Singapore.

"Our men and women in blue are a real treasure," he said. "Their daily toil often goes unappreciated, but is the stuff that produces the almost miraculous safety-from-crime that we enjoy every day. I only hope that my leadership has been worthy of their hard work and sacrifice."

Mr Ng has helmed the Singapore Police Force (SPF) for close to five years.

His succesor, Mr Hoong, has served 27 years in the Police Force. Mr Hoong is currently also director of the Criminal Investigation Department, and has held various key appointments including commander of Bedok Police Division and director of Police Intelligence.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean thanked Mr Ng "for his dedication and commitment to keeping Singapore safe and secure in his 29 years with the Singapore Police Force".

Said Mr Teo: "During his tour of duty as Commissioner of Police, he has made significant improvements to reduce crime and bring unlicensed money lending under control. He has also introduced various initiatives to increase the effectiveness of the force and to provide our Officers with more capabilities to carry out their duties, such as in Community Policing and the deployment of Police cameras in our HDB estates to fight crime.

"Joo Hee has also played an active role to further strengthen the Singapore Police Force's partnership and collaboration with regional and international law enforcement agencies through joint operations and sharing of information to combat transnational crime. All of us in MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) wish Joo Hee well in his future responsibilities."

In a statement on Wednesday, the MHA noted that the crime rate in Singapore reached a 30-year low last year during Mr Ng's term as commissioner.

"Mr Ng has provided strong leadership in reshaping SPF's strategies and putting in place systemic approaches in community policing, tackling unlicensed money lending and related harassment cases, as well as technology to facilitate policing," the Ministry said.

As police chief, Mr Ng also led the force through the Little India riot on Dec 8 last year and the subsequent Committee of Inquiry hearing that followed.

During the inquiry, he said he wanted to recruit 1,000 more police officers to beef up the anti-riot capability of the police and keep Singapore safe.

New mata chief got his welcome gift from hackers?

Any way so Obvious that 999 call center had been strongly overwhelmed by 1627
's huge user base that's why got the mata Answering Machine.

That means many many real emgergency calls will never get through to mata.

This is a form of DOS ATTACK on 999.

Same as Little India Riots the mata lines jammed up and got fucked.

New mata chief still pulling his hair off trying to COVER UP?

huh?

I think it is not hacked. Some clown doing testing in m1 might have key in random number and of all numbers, a series of 9 was keyed-in in front, resulting in calls routing to 999. Such mistake happened before and police will know.

Engineer qualified to program call router can not be like such 3 years old handphone users. Forwarding main toll free customer service number to any other number is critical enough not to even think about the national emergency hotline. INTENTIONAL SABOTAGE is highest suspision. Delibrately chosen the huge caller volumn hotline and divert to the most important emergency hotline, knowing for sure will compromise and overwhelm it.

When done, you can do ANY CRIME or TERROR ATTACK in SG not worry of response from national security forces.

Such testing usually done by technical staff (ft). The last case I heard of was many years ago. It was the great job of a pinoy under the employment of a big mnc. Police called the co immediately and it was really embarrassing.

All this seems innocent enough until this........"A statement on the M1 website said: "Some calls to our hotline earlier today were inadvertently diverted to 999. The issue has since been rectified. Please reset your handset. We apologise for the inconvenience caused."

Why need to reset handset if it is just a mere call forwarding error? How about landlines? How to reset?
