All 55,000 tickets have been snapped up for a blockbuster exhibition between football giants Brazil and Japan at the new Singapore National Stadium on Tuesday.
This is the first-ever sold-out event at the crown jewel of the billion-dollar Singapore Sports Hub, according to event promoter World Sport Group.
While all eyes will be on the likes of Brazilian golden boy Neymar and Blue Samurai heartthrob Keisuke Honda, it is the abysmal state of the National Stadium’s pitch that threatens to upset the show.
A Reuters report on Friday said the “appalling” playing surface “seemed to have as much sand on it as grass, and was cut up in several areas”.
The S$800,000 pitch, a hybrid of natural grass and artificial fibres, is reportedly so “poor” that both countries may not trot out their biggest stars at the risk of injury.

The stadium is obviously not ready, but nevertheless the cronies and nincompoops in charge deem it essential to host plenty of events and matches, to earn more money. They are emulating their greedy and rent-seeking masters.

This is not unlike a new shopping mall having a 'soft launch' before the official launch date, and many of the shops are not yet open.

However, the stadium is hosting a match with world class footballers. If they get injured, there'll be huge problems for their clubs I don't think your shitty grass can pay for a year of their wages.

It must be very profitable to be a PAP contractor.

None of these hybrid Desso pitches were ever installed at Latitude 1 deg north.They never checked if it can grow in tropics with the Blue grass,Rye grass and nylon fibers.

Also grass needs sun and water the Sports hub roof has too much shade.

That's pretty much summed up what went wrong.

An insider told me that the decision on what type of grass to use was taken rather late. This was because in typical PAP stingy fashion, Sports Hub hesitated again and again on spending so much for the pitch but yet has to aim for good playable and safe pitch of a standard that matches the spanking new stadium.

Because of the long time taken to decide on the grass, it was left with only a very short period to get the grass right. Soon it became apparent that the grass was not up to standard and there was a flurry of meetings if the first event - World Club Rugby tournament should go ahead. But again, Sports Hub in typical PAP greedy fashion, went ahead with that. As the grass has literally not taken root, the pitch was severely damaged, beyond repair actually. The only way is to start all over again but that would mean matches like the Juventus and now Brazil-Japan would have to be put off. Again, Sports Hub opted for the revenue thus putting Singapore to be shamed the whole world over when international media covering that match all focused on the very poor field condition.

The reasons leading to the bald pitch is symptomatic of all PAP led organisation.

Why neber use the same grass contractor as turfclub. Knn, turfclub every week at least one day run on turf, that 9-12 races with average of 8 horses per race thunder across the straight, yet the lane closest to the inner rail still full of turf every race day.
