Do Plants Need Sunlight?

This lesson developed by Reach Out!
Recommended Age Group: Early Elementary, Later Elementary
Guiding Questions:
1. Do plants need sunlight?
2. What happens if plants do not get sunlight?
Objectives
Concepts:
Plants need sunlight (or the right kind and amount of electric light) in order to make chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll is the chemical that makes plants green.
Principles:
Green plants need these things in order to use the energy from light in order to grow:
Water
Minerals
Light
Carbon Dioxide
Chlorophyll
Facts:
If plants do not get sunlight, they cannot produce chlorophyll and they will lose their green color and eventually die.
If plants lack any of the other things they need to grow, they will die.
Note that some plants are not green, although they do have chlorophyll. In colorful plants like coleus or purpleleaf plum, the chlorophyll’s color is masked or hidden by other pigments.
Skills
Making Observations
Making Comparisons
Communicating Findings
Making Inferences
Drawing Conclusions
Materials:
A green plant with healthy green leaves

FAS say National Stadium grass is shit, how about use Jln Besar stadium for Suzuki

malaysian national team football coach tell them to fuck off.

SINGAPORE: “No artificial turf please, we prefer natural grass” – that is the message being conveyed to the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) following the confirmation of Singapore as host of the AFF Suzuki Cup Group B matches.

The iconic 55,000-seater National Stadium has already been given the green light by the AFF after a recent commitment by stadium authorities Sports Hub Pte Ltd (SHPL) to deliver a playable surface when the group kicks off on Nov 23.

The 8,000-capacity Jalan Besar Stadium, which has an artificial surface, has been mooted by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) as a possible complementary venue, along with the Bishan and Choa Chu Kang stadiums.

This follows the request by SHPL that the National Stadium host only three – instead of all six – of the Group B matches so as to maintain the condition and quality of the pitch.

YISHUN STADIUM A POSSIBLE VENUE

TODAY has learnt that the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), whose national team are drawn in Group B alongside hosts and defending champions Singapore, Thailand and Myanmar, has suggested the Yishun Stadium as a possible venue for the other matches.

Yishun served as the home ground for the Harimau Muda team in the S-League two seasons ago and, more pertinently, has a natural grass surface.

Said FAM secretary-general Hamidin Amin: “We are writing to the AFF requesting that they should not consider Jalan Besar Stadium as the second venue. I believe all the other teams in the group also do not like the idea of playing on artificial turf.

“We should be fair to all the teams in the group by playing all matches on natural grass. We are suggesting Yishun Stadium because some of our players are familiar with the stadium when they played for Harimau Muda.”

Malaysian head coach Dollah Salleh has given the cold shoulder to the idea of playing at Jalan Besar.

“The Suzuki Cup is a prestigious tournament, and therefore a good playing surface is important. Not on an artificial turf pitch,” Dollah told TODAY. “Already we have some tough matches ahead and we don’t need the distraction of playing on a plastic pitch.”

The AFF will meet the FAS to finalise the decision on the alternate venue, with the National Stadium likely to host all three matches involving the home team.

The poor state of the National Stadium pitch has drawn plenty of flak recently, with Brazil coach Dunga saying, ahead of his team’s friendly against Japan last week, that it has more sand than grass.

To preserve the pitch for the AFF Suzuki Cup, SHPL was forced to take drastic measures, including cancelling an international rugby match between the Maori All Blacks and the Asia Pacific Dragons, postponing a Jay Chou concert from Nov 8 to Dec 27, and moving the stage for Friday’s Mariah Carey concert away from the pitch.

FAM’s Hamidin said any stadium – except Jalan Besar – is fine by them. “We hope the AFF will consider our request, but there is nothing we can do if they decide to go ahead with Jalan Besar Stadium,” he added.

S'pore loses last spot in Super Rugby league due to shit grass of National Stadium

SYDNEY — Japan has beaten out Singapore as the preferred host for the 18th team in the expanded Super Rugby competition, governing body SANZAR said on today (Oct 24).

The southern hemisphere provincial competition will increase from 15 to 18 teams in 2016, with one team from South Africa and another from Argentina already awarded places.

Japan and Singapore were vying against each other for the last available spot with Japan getting the vote after a meeting of the South African, New Zealand and Australian Rugby (SANZAR) executive board.

“Compelling proposals were put forth by Japan and Singapore in what was a very competitive tender process and we thank both parties for their passion in sharing our vision to expand the competition to new fans, territories and commercial markets,” SANZAR chief executive Greg Peters said in a statement.

“While ultimately edged out in this instance, Singapore presented a highly attractive bid and we will maintain a positive relationship with an eye to potentially working with them in the future.

“Following the Executive Committee’s decision however, SANZAR will now work exclusively with the JRFU to finalise arrangements for their entry in to Super Rugby, subject to execution of the formal participation agreement.”

The new format of the competition will feature two South African conferences, one of which will include the Asian team, and coincides with the renegotiation of the broadcasting agreements that financially underpin it.

The confirmation from SANZAR came just 24 hours after Singapore’s bid team publicly conceded defeat to Japan, which has already been selected to host the 2019 World Cup.

The writing was on the wall for Singapore in July when SANZAR said geographic location was among the key criteria when shortlisting the two Asian bids.

Earlier this month, South African Rugby Union President Oregan Hoskins told reporters that Japan’s bid proposal had been changed to include Singapore as a host for some of the matches.

It is understood Singapore would host up to four matches at their 55,000 seat, retractable roof National Stadium at the city-state’s new US$1 billion (S$1.28 billion) Sports Hub, although the format and number of games in the 2016 season is yet to be determined.

Media reports have also suggested Singapore could replace Tokyo as one of the hosts for the expanded IRB Sevens series in 2016.

The International Rugby Board is expected to announce the venues for the sevens series within the next few weeks.

Mr Greg Series, the financial backer of the Singapore bid, said in a statement: “The news that the Japan team will play matches in Singapore is also welcomed, as knowing that they will need to invest in rugby in Singapore and South-East Asia in order to achieve that, is a consequence we warmly endorse, as this was a key and major component of our proposal.” REUTERS

Japan got a credible rugby team.maybe champions of Asia. Singapore will merely import all the players.besides, can always use other stadiums to the rugby by expanding the spectator stand. I doubt if rugby can fill up the mega stadium.
