It was suggested in Parliament by MP Gan Thaim Poh that the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) systems be turned off on Friday afternoons from 12 noon to promote more family time.

In response, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew rejected the idea saying that they would not do so.

Lui explained that removing the ERP charges would lead to more congestion, especially on roads like Havelock Road and the North-bound Central Expressway (CTE). These roads already see congestion on Friday afternoons and removing ERP tolls would make it worse.

Mr Lui elaborated that while the government wants to promote more family time, it would not be a desirable trade off to remove ERPs because people would suffer from more congestion.

“Traffic congestion, at any time of the day, affects our quality of life, including family life, our living environment and our enjoyment of it, and the efficiency of the economy,” Mr Lui explained.

Can the Ministry cancel the free entry for malaysian cars entering into singapore everyday after 5pm and other free days

After 5pm is always heavy traffics everyday due to workers returning home and the free entry will add to the congestion in singapore road.
or is this an excuse to increase erp due to congestion

Also erp on certain road extend to 8.30pm even on saturday while cars from malaysia contribute to the congestion

nonsensical suggestion by Gan Thaim Poh. so if you turn off ERP on friday noons, more people are going to take leave to go home? or is he encouraging people to slack off and sneak off on fridays?

what a waste of parliamentary time. that's the best Gan can do to promote family time?

MPs should be fined $1000 for every stupid suggestion they make.

Gan is an idiot. He is just suggesting for the sake of showing presence.

A better suggestion would be to turn off the ERP along CTE towards AMK after 6pm. Those are going home.
