In the old days, if an MP even has a hint of unethical and unscrupulous behaviour, Old fart would have gotten rid of him in a heartbeat. Gay loong has really lost control of the party.

I may be stupid and not have university degree but Susan Lim and her husband are both highly qualified people. Do you think they believe Alvin's excuse?

All invoices for legal services rendered by lawyers must be signed and approved by at least a managing partner. Alvin provided the service as well as being a managing partner. How could he plead ignorance?

Unwittingly Susan has by her actions helped to exposed how far we are from being a virtuous or good society.

It is not surprising that the lawyer is a member of a political party where ministers pay themselves the highest salary in the world, the PM openly talks about fixing the opposition and have no qualms to quash any form of political dissent.(not to talk about forcing people to keep their monies with the govt beyond 55)

They are so bold because they think they have "60%" of the people behind them but this is a fallacy as shown by the voting results for patrick tan's father.

The OTHER GSS - lawyers and doctors' fees

What then to read of the persistent refusal of the Singapore Medical Council's (SMC) to accept the court's judgments about their share of overcharging? By appealing against the latest round of price slashings will the SMC not pose a real risk of undermining public confidence in the judicial system, a charge which is currently levied at one blogger?

When Assistant Registrar Jacqueline Lee decided that Senior Counsel Alvin Yeo's bill for legal fees was way too high - even the combined 718 hours spent on the case by Alvin Yeo, Melanie Ho and Lim Wei Lee of WongPartnership were inflated to 1,900 hours - shouldn't the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) of the Singapore Police Force be called in to...

Unfortunately, the Law Society DOES think we are stupid.

Re: The OTHER GSS - lawyers and doctors' fees

It is a real joke that SMC even dared to appeal. Shouldn't this be left to the individual lawyers, is there a conflict of interest for SMC to appeal on behalf of the losing politician/expert witness/doctors, oops I meant the greedy overcharging lawyer?

So SMC is trying to tell us the judicial registrar must made a big mistake by appealing ?

SMC should be sued. SMC has lost credibility. The current SMC board should be fired.

The Law Society also has verified that the SMC paid a higher amount to WongPartnership than it is claiming from Dr Lim.

Will the Auditor General be saying anything about this?
Considering that the Law Society is funded by taxpayers, where and what is the responsibility for such over payments?

Re: PAP MPs raised hell over minions Roy and Hui Hui, silent on Alvin Yeo

The Alvin Yeo connection

The SMC billed Susan Lim for the legal services they needed from WongPartnership, as one component of costs. These legal fees the SMC claimed they had to pay came to $900,000 for three lawyers, one of whom was Alvin Yeo. The Sunday Times on 26 October 2014 summarised the High Court’s findings thus:

The judgment: A doctor found guilty in an SMC disciplinary hearing can only be charged for the services of one lawyer – unless the proceedings are so complex they call for another lawyer who must be certified by SMC’s disciplinary committee.

This certification was not done in this case.

Assistant Registrar Jacqueline Lee decided what was claimed for both Ms Melanie Ho and Ms Lim Wei Lee should not be allowed, andthe $514,000 claimed for Senior Counsel Alvin Yeo’s work was too high.

The SMC had originally presented a bill of $1,229,804 for 1,900 hours spent by its lawyers on the case, claiming “out of abundance of caution, the amount stated is a reduced figure of the time spent”. The Law Society also has verified that the SMC paid a higher amount to WongPartnership than it is claiming from Dr Lim.

Ms Lee said that SMC’s statement meant little since she had no information on how much time had actually been spent, and criticised the council for not detailing what the lawyers had spent their time on.

She also pointed out that “collectively, Mr Yeo, Ms Ho and Ms Lim allegedly spent 718 hours” – much less than the 1,900 hours claimed for.

Ms Lee added that if the 1,900 hours included two replacement lawyers catching up on what had happened before they joined the team, “it would be unreasonable to make the respondent (Dr Lim) bear the costs arising from any such inefficiency in the conduct of the prosecution”.

– Sunday Times, 26 Oct 2014, Exorbitant, unreasonable.

As you can see from above, the facts are rather more layered and contestable than the headlines might suggest, but the public — as publics tend to be — is not going to bother much with the nuanced details of the above. All people are going to remember a week or more from now, and going into the next general election, is that a PAP member of parliament was connected with a case which the High Court considered to be overbilling. This nugget of news is going to feed into the easily-believed view that the well-off have no conscience, no sense of responsibility to wider society, and are driven by greed. And the well-off includes the ruling elite snuggling within the bosom of the PAP. As I mentioned above, in these times of ever-widening income gap — some might even describe it as obscene — such a view will find much resonance.

Against this, it is going to be virtually impossible for the PAP to convince anyone other than its diehard loyalists that its candidates are standing for election because they identify with ordinary people, or that they sense a calling to serve. Moreover, the claim of immaculate integrity that the party prides itself with is now going to have new m&d sticking to it.

That said, the SMC is appealing this decision, so the final outcome may be quite different again. However, I’d wager that even if the appeal overturns the Assistant Registrar’s finding, no one is going to believe that the $900,000 bill was fair. You can’t force people to change their private opinions; instead they are very likely to take the view that the same elite are circling the wagons defending their own.

The affective divide, a term so famously coined by Catherine Lim two decades ago, will just get wider.

SINGAPORE — Former Member of Parliament (MP) Alvin Yeo died on Saturday (July 30), after a two-year battle with cancer. He was aged 60.
Yeo was first elected as an MP of Hong Kah Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in 2006. He was then part of Chua Chu Kang GRC from 2011 to 2015, before stepping down from politics.
He was also the chairman and senior partner at law firm WongPartnership.
Tributes from his former Parliamentary colleagues poured in on social media after news of his death broke on Saturday.
In a Facebook post, Marsiling-Yew Tee MP Alex Yam called Yeo a “giant in the legal fraternity", having been appointed Senior Counsel in 2000 at the age of 37, the youngest ever to be so appointed.
“While he towered over everyone with his height, he was gentle at heart, a big brother who guided and treated me with great kindness,” said Mr Yam, who was part of Chua Chu Kang GRC when he entered politics in 2011.
“I found out close to the end of 2020 that he was ill. He was undergoing treatment then and yet he remained positive, saying that he looked forward to meet up with a few of us in 2022 when he was fully recovered,” Mr Yam added.
Incumbent Chua Chu Kang GRC MP Low Yen Ling said Yeo “was like a big brother” to her when she first joined the GRC in 2011.
“Alvin was always very kind and encouraging. I often looked forward to listening to his thoughtful and insightful speeches in Parliament. His example as a caring MP and colleague would always stay fresh in my heart and mind,” said Ms Low, who is also Minister of State for the Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth.
Former MP Yee Chia Hsing, who took over Yeo's ward after he stepped down, said Yeo was the “perfect gentleman” who was remembered fondly by residents.
"Rest in peace Alvin, you will be missed," Mr Yee wrote on Facebook.
Yeo is survived by his wife and their two children.
