A candlelight vigil was held at Hong Lim Park on Wednesday evening to show Singaporeans' solidarity with Hong Kong protesters, but the police are now questioning some of the attendees.
Police had spoken to organisers of the vigil and reminded them that it was illegal for foreigners to gather there without a permit under the Public Order Act.
While organisers made an announcement to the approximately 300 people who showed up reminding them that foreigners were not allowed, it seems some Hong Kongers still chose to stay and now, some of them are being questioned by police.

So far, no arrests have been made in relation to the incident but they reminded the public that only Singaporeans and Permanent Residents are allowed to take part in demonstrations which are held at Hong Lim Park. This is part of the terms and conditions stated for the park under NPark's rules.

Foreigners are only allowed to participate in events there if they have a permit from the police.

The police did clarify that foreigners can observe events but they cannot participate.

What may constitute participation includes the chanting of slogans, waving of flags, holding placards, giving speeches or otherwise participating in what is happening.

"The Speakers' Corner is a designated site for Singapore Citizens to speak freely on issues as long as they do not touch on racial or religious matters ... While foreigners are allowed to work or live here, they have to abide by our laws. They should not import their domestic issues from their countries into Singapore and conduct activities which can disturb public order," the police spokesperson explained.

The participants at the Candlelight Vigil on Wednesday sang Cantonese songs, held umbrellas, lit candles, and wrote messages of support for the people in Hong Kong.

Organiser of the event, Jolovan Wham, explained that he is not aware of who the Hong Kongers are that are being questioned and he is not currently being questioned himself.

I disagree with the writer of the letter “What really matters in Hong Lim Park clash” (Oct 1).
Ironically, his sweeping statements that apparently absolve one party from any and all blame, and his throwing of labels at the protesters are not in the interest of fairness.
Firstly, who started it matters. Provocation has always been a factor in judging a situation.
Secondly, the protesters moved off before the children’s performance began.
Chanting slogans is different from heckling and is precisely what one expects to happen during a demonstration, notably permitted in Singapore only at Hong Lim Park.

On god. This here is the failure of the education system. People are not breaking the law when going to watch. Your parents should have sent you to a special school with TSL
