London: British warplanes flew their first mission over Iraq since parliament authorised strikes against Islamic State jihadists, but returned without bombing on Saturday, the Ministry of Defence in London said.

Royal Air Force Tornado GR4 combat jets returned to Britain`s RAF Akrotiri base on Cyprus without dropping any of their load of Paveway IV laser-guided bombs, after a seven-hour mission that began before dawn from the Mediterranean island.

"On this occasion no targets were identified as requiring immediate air attack by our aircraft," a ministry spokesman said.

However, the jets` surveillance gathered information that will "help acquire potential targets for future operations, either by aircraft or Iraqi ground forces," the spokesman said.

British lawmakers on Friday voted overwhelmingly to join the US-led air strikes in northern Iraq following a formal request for help from the Iraqi government.



Six British Tornados have been based on Cyprus since last month, from where they have been conducting reconnaissance missions, but the vote allows their role to expand to include striking IS targets.

The campaign against the Islamist group gathered pace this week, as Belgium and Denmark agreed to join the bombing and Britain`s lower house of parliament voted in favour of air strikes in Iraq.

On Saturday, a fresh round of bombings by the US, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates damaged an IS-held airfield, a garrison and a training camp near the group`s headquarters in Raqa, the Pentagon said.

In Iraq, a fighting position and four armed vehicles were hit, it added.

IS`s brutal abuses against civilians, rival fighters and Arab and Western hostages, as well as its success in recruiting Western members, have triggered international alarm.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said Saturday the RAF was there to "play our part".

"We are one part of a large international coalition," he said during a visit to Didcot, southern England.

"But the crucial part of that coalition is that it is led by the Iraqi government, the legitimate government of Iraq, and its security forces. We are there to play our part and help deal with this appalling terrorist organisation."

Besides the Tornados, the RAF also has a Rivet Joint spy plane in the region which is stepping up surveillance efforts to identify potential targets.

Western countries have no appetite for casualties and hence reluctant to send in ground troops. Air campaign itself is of limited effcetiveness against ISIS since they are scattered and mixed amongst civilians. Western power don't have ally that they can depend on to take the ground. Iraq army like SAF is totally useless. Kurdish army can only hold the ground they have and unable stretch too far. Free Syrian army won't fight ISIS for both their number one enemy is still Assad regime and why should Free Syrai army create 2 enemies( Assad and ISIS) ?

Assad would be more than happy to let the western airforce does the work for him by bombing ISIS in Syria. Of course he cannot openly endorse such action becuase it infringes on his airspace.

They should use predator drones instead targets like these are like mosquitoes bites to the Angmo world.

Save some real ammo for the real armies like the Syrian military!

it's important to understand the IS is not a local organisation within syria or iraq. they are foreign invaders mingling with a discontent local group that felt repressed becos of the Ba'ath party faith in saddam hussien. the american hope to sieve n separate out both groups. the agenda is clear. taking out their ability to attack new targets. restrict their resources, their recruitment drive, their money trail and they will starve becos their ISIL location is land locked and surrounded by hostility.

a slow war will work against ISIL. so when you cook a frog, you dont need microwave.

The underlying conditions of inequality for income, racial tension, territorial bounds r unprecedented. In this respect the isil n taliban r nor really a force to b reckoned as they do not hv the means to mass produce heavy armory nor air power. Until that happen. Any suggestion is merely hearsay. dont underestimate the power of guerilla warfare....during the lebanon war,hezbollah militants suceeded in stopping the israeli army from advancing into lebanon with the use of soviet technology,their Kornet missiles managed to take out 56 out of 300+ of israeli's so called merkava,chariot of god tanks......hezbollah also succeeded in crippling one of israel's state of the art stealth destroyer with china made c-802 missile.....lebanon war was a terrible blow to Israeli's ego,it shattered their illusions of invincibility and how easily their technological advantage was negated by simple use of soviet technology.

The best strategy for US is to cooperate with Syria and Iran, something which US is not willing.

This air campaign is going nowhere without an effective ground presence.
