SINGAPORE - Singapore recorded its lowest annual population growth in a decade in the year up to June 2014, due to slower growth in the non-resident population.

According to figures released in the Department of Statistics' Population Trends 2014 report, Singapore's total population was 5.47 million as of June 2014 with 3.87 million residents and 1.6 million non-residents.

The resident population comprised 3.34 million Singapore citizens and 0.53 million permanent residents.

Singapore's total population in 2014 recorded 1.3 per cent growth, lower than the 1.6 per cent growth recorded in 2013.

The number of Singapore citizens grew by 0.9 per cent, but non-resident growth slowed to 2.9 per cent from 4.0 per cent last year.

The National Population and Talent Division said in its report that slower growth in the non-resident population was "due to concrete steps taken to slow the growth of our foreign workforce to a more sustainable pace."

The report also showed that the proportion of married persons in the resident population fell from 62 per cent to 60 per cent. A total of 26,254 marriages were registered in 2013, 6 per cent lower than the 27,936 in 2012.

As for singles, there was a 70 per cent increase of single men aged between 25 and 29 in 203, and a 46 per cent increase of single women in the same age group.

The report also stated that there is was significant proportion of males and females in their 30s who remained single last year.

The total fertility rate also showed a decline, with only 1.19 births per female in 2013 as compared to 1.29 in 2012. The decrease was seen across all ethnic groups, with Chinese experiencing the largest decline.Reflecting Singapore's ageing population, the median age of the resident population increased to 39.3 years in 2014 from 38.9 in 2013. The proportion of citizens aged 65 years and above also increased from 11.7 per cent in 2013 to 12.4 per cent in 2014.

Figures also showed that women residents continued to outnumber men, with a sex ratio of 967 males per 1,000 females in 2014.

Please lah, slow growth is nevertheless still growing.

Publish an article when the total population drops.

Residents = Citizens + PRs. Maybe the non-residents had converted to citizens or PRs?

=> As resources become more scarce, do you expect more or less reproduction? Even a primary school kid knows that. Yet the FAP Traitors can have the gall bluff SGs that importing more FTrash can solve the fertility issue! And 60% dumbos actually buy it!

And once they have 'revamped' the Jurong Lake area you can expect more people to be squeezed into that area. You think they're doing it for aesthetic reasons?

6 million population and beyond, here we come! :*:

We refer to the article “Singapore population now at 5.47 million, slowest growth in 10 years” (Straits Times, Sep 25).

Slowest growth in a decade?

It states that “Singapore’s population grew at its slowest pace in a decade in the one year to June 2014, due to a slow down in the inflow of foreign workers.”

How many S’poreans to new citizens & foreigners?

Since it is the slowest growth in 10 years “due to a slow down in the inflow of foreign workers” – we were curious as to the relative growth of foreigners and new citizens to Singaporeans, i.e. for every 1 Singaporean increased – how many foreigners and new citizens increased?

29,500 citizens, but 20,572 new citizens?

As the growth in citizens was 29,500 – if we less off the 20,572 new citizens – we get only 8,928 “true blue” Singaporeans.
With 31,017 citizen births less 18,938 deaths – we get 12,079. Does this mean that Singaporeans who may have left Singapore accounted mainly for the difference of 3,151 citizens (12,079 minus 8,928)?

1 Singapore = 2 new citizens?
In other words, for every 1 “true blue” Singaporean increased – there were about 2 new citizens (20,572 divided by 8,928).

<ins id="aswift_1_expand" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: currentColor; width: 336px; height: 280px; display: inline-table; visibility: visible; position: relative; background-color: transparent; border-image: none;"><ins id="aswift_1_anchor" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: currentColor; width: 336px; height: 280px; display: block; visibility: visible; position: relative; background-color: transparent; border-image: none;"><iframe name="aswift_1" width="336" height="280" id="aswift_1" frameBorder="0" marginWidth="0" marginHeight="0" scrolling="no" vspace="0" hspace="0" allowfullscreen="true" style="left: 0px; top: 0px; position: absolute;" allowTransparency="true"></iframe></ins></ins>

Foreigners increased by 44,600?
The increase in foreigners was 44,600.

1 Singaporean = 5 foreigners?
So, does it mean that for every “true blue” Singaporean increased – there was an increase of about 5 foreigners (44,600 divided by 8.928)?

1 Singaporean = 2 new citizens + 5 foreigners?
Hence, for every 1 “true blue” Singaporean – we had about 2 new citizens and 5 foreigners?
At this rate, even if it is the slowest overall population growth rate in a decade – “true blue” Singaporeans may increasingly become a minority in their homeland in time to come.

Re: Wah SGP population plunge!!

1) It is still growing
2) It was 1.6% last year. This year it's 1.4%. However, 1.4% is on new total. Although lesser, not by very much
3) There have achieved this by limiting WP. All the quota for Work Permit and S Pass has gone up by 50%, thereabouts. Our problems is never about WP. We do not want to be a construction working. We want to be bankers in top banks. When will they get it?
4) Seems like they are really gearing up for elections..... There seems to be a line up of articles and profiling recently. They could be launching this, then using their big data to test the ground sentiments and then using the results to determine when to call for election

5.47 million ...2.5 million sinkees (born here) is still less than 500k naturalized sinkees (which I consider as foreigners) and 2.47 foreigners.

2.97 million foreigners versus 2.5 million sinkees. The born here sinkee population is shrinking!

This is a temporary blip in the population size. After GE 2016, it will be business as usual and the population ramp up will make up for the lost time.

There is no quota on the EP pass. That category is suppressing the PMET wages. They just choose not to get it. They rather the PMETs retrain as construction workers, taxi drivers and agents.

With this 5.47m population, all PAP needs to do is to maintain an average growth rate of 1.5% and we will hit 6.9M population by 2030.

With election coming next year, expect the growth rate for next year to be even lower than 1.4% and will start to pick up after the election. Of course it also depend very much on how PAP perform during GE15.
